[Vonage] Vonage voice chop

Vonage voice chop when people are talking to me. They hear me fine but I can hardly hear them. Seems to worsen when Internet is being used. My dl speed is 562,904 bps, up is 428,464 bps, qos is 92%, rtt is 20ms with a max pause of 438ms. It should be more than adequate. Vonage is sending a new router. I have no filters on the phone and didnt install the router software that came with it.
Thanks for any suggestions...

have you checked these speeds many times during the Internet busy hour to find the average and worst cases? Your 500K downstream is low-end DSL, I presume. You should also describe your LAN setup.

Frankly, if your dl speed is 500k, it is most unlikely that your upload speed is over 400k. It is more likely 128k, if not lower.

My upload speed is correct. My dsl provider has very high uploads and mediocre downloads. Strange I know but true. My network is 10/100 with 5 computers on it. I have my dsl modem running to a dlink wireless di-524 with one of the lan connections running to my vonage linksys rt31p2. Its a peer to peer network.

500kbps shared between 5 computers and a VOIP link sound really stretching it. if it's choppy esp when some pc are surfing the web, then obviously you don't have enough bandwidth to share among everyone and your VOIP. Your upload might be fine but download probably degraded at times. why don't you do a speed test using one of the tools on this site and see how fast your connection is to some test servers.

Have you looked at these Vonage troubleshooting articles? It looks as if you are using the alternate setup (Vonage voip router behind main router), possibly the first setup (Vonage voip router before the main router) would work better for you.

Also, have you tried going into your Vonage Dashboard and adjusting the Bandwidth Saver from it's default value of 90 Kbps to 50 Kbps? I was getting some dropout during heavy net activity. Changing the value to 50 Kbps fixed that and I noticed no difference in voice quality. Bandwidth for a standard POTS line or an ISDN voice line is limited to 56 Kbps, so the Bandwidth Saver midrange value of 50 Kbps is comparable.

I will try putting the vonage before in the first article and see how it works. Yes I am at the lowest setting in dashboard bandwidth saver.
Thanks for finding those links...:D

Adsl uses from 14khz to 1.1mhz. The upload range is between 14khz to 140khz. It is impossible to achieve such a high upload speed that is nearly as much as the download speed. No adsl provider offers this. Therefore, I still question those figures you cite, unless you have another form of dsl than adsl.

I suggest switching QoS to 80 to 85%.

yes and no. what VZ does is to sell you an ADSL line with high speed then throttle the downside to equivalent to the upside. ex: a 384/384, 768/768 (of course, for the latter, you need to be able to qual for the 7M/768k loop...) no idea if that's what he has...
