| [Help Me] DWL-G810 wireless bridge problem-- won't conncet
Hi everyone,
I bought the D-Link DWL-G810 wireless G bridge to connect TiVo to my G network without all the wires and using WPA instead of WEP.
I hooked it up to my laptop to configure it. Changed it to WPA-TKIP, added a 26 length key, changed ssid, set a static ip address and I'm still having problems pinging my wireless router.
I have the next to latest firmware -- 2.15 I believe. I read some places on the internet that WPA just doesn't work with this device. The notes for the latest do not say WPA support was fixed.
Anyone have experience setting this puppy up? -- no sig |

| "I read ... WPA just doesn't work with this device" Correct. But WEP works just fine.
It's because the wireless client/bridge function of the product is implemented using Wireless Distribution System, WDS.
Here's a helpful article: »www.tomsnetworking.com/Sections-···age1.php and here's a quote:
Dynamically assigned and rotated encryption keys are not supported in a WDS connection. This means that Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and other dynamic key assignment technology may not be used. Static WEP keys only may be used in a WDS connection, including any STAs that associate to a WDS repeating AP.
However, I'm aware of a very limited number of implementations (including the Linksys WRT54G running Sveasoft third party firmware) where WPA works over a WDS link. I don't believe there's any inherent reason why it can't work, but I've not yet come across any D-Link products where it does
Hope this helps |

| It works just fine, upgrade to latest 3.10b29 firmware and everuthing will be fixed. You can find the firmware on several european dlink ftp site.
It is not using wds, it is a real wireless client. We use it a lot in a wpa-psk security mode.

| The ZyXEL P-330W ($50 or so at CompUSA) is what I'm using with my TiVo for WPA-PSK TKIP.

2 edits | reply to rpingar rpingar: Thank you for the correction and info. I'm pleased to learn that the DWL-G810 works for you with WPA-PSK.
Looking at the Release Notes it seems that later firmware releases for the DWL-G810 have WDS specifically disabled. This probably also explains why there are mixed reports that the device either does or does not support connection to multiple devices behind a switch.
WDS uses an 802.11 MAC frame with four MAC address fields - these four addresses (Destination Address, Source Address, Receiver Address, and Transmitter Address) are specifically used in wireless bridge implementations.
Without this it is likely that the device can only support a single connected device, unless it implements some proprietary means of tracking and distributing traffic to multiple connected MAC addresses. What does your experience show of using the DWL-G810 with an Ethernet switch?
Strangely, the Release Notes for the earlier 2.13b09 firmware include the following: When AP sends assoc response with GST_WDS IE, DWL-G810 will work in wds mode. and also: When G810 works in WPA-PSK mode, it always works in mac clone mode I suspect it is the second of these that makes WPA-PSK work, since the unique encryption key for a frame is (partly) derived from the transmitter MAC address.
The first of these I find a little puzzling - I usually take 'GST' to stand for Global Sun Technology, the OEM which manufacturers much of D-Link's kit. It's possible that 'IE' is a typo for 'ID'. It seems to imply that the DWL-G810 will work in WDS mode if so notified by some 'capability information' in the Association Response frame - but this would be non-standard. Or maybe it's a special SSID value used for testing? It's all a little bit unclear and I'm starting to guess - I don't currently have a DWL-G810 to hand to test with. Anyone?
Kind regards

| reply to rpingar Trying to get WPA to work on DWL-G810 (H/W Ver.:B2):
With 2.15 firmware, "Home" tab shows only a few packets going back and forth, with a few dropped packets... when it hits 5 dropped packets, the device reboots itself.
So, I updated to the 3.10b29 firmware, as was suggested here. Still no joy. "Home" tab shows a few dozen packets going back and forth (no dropped packets reported), and then the device reboots itself.
WEP still appears to work just as it did on the 2.15 firmware. |

| Maybe I'm wrong but as far as I know the 3.x Firmware is only suitable for the Rev C Version of G810.
My G810 Rev C1 supports WPA-PSK Mode but it can handle only 1 Client at its LAN-port. It is not possible to use a switch and two or more clients. Tried it more than once.
Don't know how Rev B works cause the Rev. C-Version was the first officially sold in Germany. |
