1 edit | [Speed] Finally: A True Comcast Network SpeedTest
It takes a little work to find, but it is definitely the best speed test (IMHO of course) available to Comcast users. You need to find one of the 'cdn' server IP's that serve your area. For a little background, the cdn servers serve the 'downloadable_install_wizard.exe' file that is used when signing up and/or changing modem.
A somewhat buggy procedure to find it:
1. ping -a your dhcp server and get the reverse DNS name: In Central Jersey/Philly that would be: phil2-pdhcp.inflow.pa.bo.comcast.net
2. If there is a number by the first part of the address (phil2 in this case), remove it, and replace pdhcp with cdn01, cdn02, cdn03, or cdn04 (I don't know if all areas have 4 cdns; some may have more or less)
3. You should now have phil-cdn01.inflow.pa.bo.comcast.net, or whatever your local cdn is.
4. Open Internet Explorer and go to
http://yourlocalcdn/downloadable_install_wizard.exe This is a 36MB file and should be a decent speedtest.
For those of us in my area, you can use
http://phil-cdn01.inflow.pa.bo.comcast.net/downloadable_install_wizard.exe without following the above steps.
Please keep in mind that the above method is by no means fool proof and just a suggestion on how to get a true speed reading on Comcast. |

I'm in central NJ so I used your file. The results seem accurate for my 6600 kbps cap. |

Hmmm. I got about the same speeds from the Atlanta server. Maybe even a wee bit faster. I think the file is a little smaller than what we'd ideally want for this purpose. |

I feel kinda dumb but how do I find out my dhcp server...
Ive got a router and it shows nothing in dhcp, I know via ipconfig /all on my pc it shows my router as the dchp server, so would the dhcp server on my router be the default gateway, if so I get... cdnt01-a-rtr.******01.**.comcast.net

Unfortunately, most routers do not tell you what the ISP's dhcp server address is. You will have to temporarily remove the router. |
