[Wireless] Slow speed

I have a cable connection (Mediacom 5000/256).

I use Motorola WR850G wireless router with the latest firmware, one wired desktop computer and one wireless desktop computer (I also have a wireless notebook but that does not matter).

My network is WPA-PSK/TKIP encrypted and I use Mac filter too.

On my wired PC I get 4.7 Mbit down all the time and the connection is rock solid but on my wireless computer I can get 1.2-2.0 Mbit only. I have tried various settings on my router but nothing worked so far. My wireless signal is Very Good - Excellent. Also if I download a lot my connection will simply terminate and I have to connect again to my router. I have tried various Tweak tests and that did not help either.

Is it normal to have this huge speed decrease over wireless?
And if not what can I do about it (except buying a new router of course)?

TIA

Check out »Wireless Networking Forum FAQ »Why is my wireless connection so slow? for some initial troubleshooting steps on slow wireless speeds.

You should be able to see at least 20 Mbps (~2.5 MB/s) with 802.11g, assuming it's been configured properly and interference has been reduced.

OK I don't use my router for internal connections (PC to PC). In fact both of my computers are locked up when it comes to LAN (no shares etc).

I purchased this router so I can use both computers online at the same time and to eliminate the need of paying for 2nd IP.

The problem here is my internet connection. I can't get more than 2.0 Mbit down on a good day (5 Mbit down is advertised) with my wireless computer while at the same time wired computer is getting 4.7 Mbit down.

Interference, and other things mentioned in the FAQ entry, apply to both LAN and internet speeds via wireless computers.

Well I guess I'll just keep playing with DrTcp settings.
