| Sun Guards?
We need to mount some integrated radios up on towers etc, and the sun here is just too hot. Air temp reaches 55C, but out in the sun we get as high as 80C.
Do you guys know if anyone makes sun guards that would mount above the unit and act as a shade without affecting performance? |

Happy Camp | Anything that provides shade would be sufficient. I would be think, though, that it should most probably NOT be metallic.

| Maybe a wood laminate(very thin but strong), or some type of fiberglass, both of them painted white. You could even make Your own with the same material that they make casts for medical problems. The problem is, I don't know where to get it?. Maybe an automobile repair shop that does body work?.

| Do you know how hot the inside of the box is getting? Depending on the material, the radio may not be as hot as you think.
I would think John's first comment about metal would be good advice if the sun hits the antenna side of the enclosure. At the least it will cause multipath, at worst, attenuation.

I built one using this stuff called StarBoard. (»www.kingstarboard.com) Think plastic plywood. Available in any shape, size, and color you could want. Can be found at any marine supply store.
I used a 1/2" thick piece, cut a little taller than the back of the radio, and attached a second piece duck-bill style over the radio using wood screws. Two holes each at the top and bottom for the U-bolts, and it was done. Fast, cheap, easy.
I might even be willing to build 140 of them for you, for the right price. PM me if interested. |

We are in central Texas. A few months ago the thermometers all read over 100F.
We have been installing InscapeData CB11 radios »www.inscapedata.com/wireless.html with integrated 9dBi antennas for the clients within 4 miles and the external models with 24dBi grids for the longer distances.
We had several "integrated" models on universal mounts installed on the tops of tin roofs. I cannot absolutely confirm it...but...I believe some of the radios failed because of the heat.
We now use the CB11 model with the external connection and a small 13dBi antenna. We hope the loss of the metal antenna that takes up almost half of the room in the box and stores up a lot of the heat will keep the radios in operation.

Here is a really crappy paint drawing of what I thought up using 2x2 angle iron and a chunk of treated plywood. Drill 4 holes through the angle iron and use two u bolts to attach. I thought this up in the last 2 minutes. Never tested. |
