 | Linksys PAP2 change from Vonage to Broadvoice Does anyone know the passwords for the Vonage Linksys PAP2 adapter? I need to change the configuration on it so that I can use it with Broadvoice.
Any ideas? |

3 edits | That's the $6,000,000 question. Those Vonage PAP2s are locked to their service, and Vonage won't unlock them. I've scanned many posts on the subject and yet to figure out a way to unlock them, although I did manage to bring up part of the PAP2's configuration menu in a web browser. Some posts I've seen on the subject post partial solutions that are so complicated that even if you posess a PhD in quantum physics, you'll probably still couldn't figure it out. At this point, I've accepted the fact that my PAP2 is now just a fancy paperweight with pretty blue lights. A PAP2 is basically a Sipura 2000 in Linksys clothing. Your best bet is to go to a site like Voxilla.com and buy a Sipura 2002 (it replaced the 2000), for $69.95, then to waste a lot of time trying to unlock your PAP2. |

 | Are the non-activated adapters locked? Can one purchase one of those and change the config? |

| reply to forrestin Linksys discontinued unlocked PAP2's last November. Like the Cisco ATA-186, they appear to be very hard to unlock, if not nearly impossible. However, last I heard, Vonage will usually unlock their devices if you pay them $45. I don't know if they still do that but they used to with the Cisco ATAs. |
|
 | reply to forrestin Vonage will only unlock a Cisco ATA and thats all. In order for any customer to Get Into a PAP2 They pretty much gotta have a presence at Vonage in order to get the Encrypt Key to The Device From what i have been told. |

 | reply to forrestin According to Sipura the devices are burned in at the factory with Vonage settings. Even if you unlock SIP GUI you can't change service provider. |
|
1 edit | reply to forrestin Actually, when I did get to my PAP2's GUI through following someone's hacking steps on another bulletin board, I did hit another password box to get into the admin menu to change things. This password I believe is set by Vonage, and differs on each TA. I called Vonage, and they refused to help unlock it. If I ever am able to get past this, I could install the latest Sipura 2000 firmware on it. But without this password, my PAP2 is still a paperweight. |

YES, the Linksys PAP2 can be unlocked from Vonage and used with another provider. Performing the act can be tricky. This will require some understanding of TFTP, DNS configuration, and a little XML (http web server pages).
I will verify it works tonight. Here's the link with the details:

 | Is there a VoIP adapter in existence you don't have in your arsenal? |

I liked the PAP2 cuz it is cheap in price ($20 in-store at staples, no rebate crap!) for 2 FXS ports and it just needed to be divorced from its locked condition. I can't take credit for that hack though.. someone beat me to it!
Hmmm.. what adapter should be next? Suggestions? |

Emboldened by the easy solution, I went to a local store, bought a PAP2 (sold for use with Vonage), and hooked it up on an isolated LAN. Then it continues...
First, I tried "reset" from the IVR menu. Strangely, it was accepted without a password and the unit rebooted, but nothing got reset. Next, since the unit had 2.0.9(LSd), I tried to upgrade. Shoot, it asked for the admin password. However, I decided to continue anyway. The unit does a DNS lookup for ls.tftp.vonage.net, so I set it to use the PC as DNS server, which was suitably configured to provide the PC's IP as the answer. Next, the unit is trying to to TFTP to port 2400. My TFTP server wasn't port agile, so I found one that was. But then, it's back on port 69, asking for /spa<MAC>.xml . I put the xml file (starting with <?xml ) under that name and voilà, it worked! Turned off provisioning, configured an account, connected to the Net, and was able to make a call. The firmware that is referenced in the link (as well as a link to a TFTP server) can be found here: »208.239.76.141/broadcast/support/linksys.php

EDIT: You should be able to bypass the SolarWinds registration form to d/l their free TFTP server by going here: »support.solarwinds.net/updates/M···ogram=52
EDIT2: The SolarWinds TFTP server does not appear to offer a TFTP port configuration setting (i.e. it presumably only runs on PORT 69). Below is a link to a WinAgents TFTP server (which comes w/ a free 30 day trial) which does allow conifiguring the TFTP port. According to the Vonage unlocking instructions, the TFTP server will need to (temporarily) be set to port 2400. »www.tftp-server.com/tftp-download.html |

the Linksys PAP2 ((provider locked)) This is getting interesting.
I am having some trouble getting my PAP2 to 'like' the .xml file and make the changes.
Has anyone else used this method to get their device working? |

Here's the link with the details: » groups.google.com/group/Asterisk···d2e6d55f So I picked up a Vonage Linksys PAP2 last night @ Staples for $20 and attempted to follow the instructions in the Google Groups post.
I'm able to get TFTP transfers to take place; however, the settings configured in the XML file don't actually "take" on the PAP2 (i.e. nothing on the PAP2 changes). Thus, it's not unlocking the device for me.
For those wanting to take a crack at it, based on the Google Groups post linked above, here's what I did:
1) Setup 2 TFTP servers on my PC (1 running on port 69, the other running on port 2400). I used SolarWinds for port 69 (since that's all it'll run on) and WinAgents for 2400. (Links to both TFTP servers are listed above in my previous post).
2) In each TFTP server's ROOT directory, I added xml file spa{MACADDR}.xml (where {MACADDR} is the MAC ADDRESS of the PAP2) w/ the XML information listed in the Google Groups post above. I started the spa{MACADDR}.XML file's data at the line beginning with <?xml ...
3) Disconnected the cable modem from my router (so that the virgin PAP2 wouldn't be able to connect to any real Vonage servers for updates).
4) I decided to use my WRT54G router (running Sveasoft Alchemy firmware) as a DNS server for mimicking Vonage's TFTP server's domain name. a) Telneted into my my WRT54G router (Sveasoft Alchemy provides a telnet option) b) Added an entry to its hosts file (/tmp/hosts) as follows: quote: 192.168.1.10 ls.tftp.vonage.net
(where 192.168.1.10 is the IP address of the PC running my TFTP servers)
c) Switched over to the WRT54G's WEB INTERFACE d) Navigated to the "Administration" tab e) Clicked the "Save Settings" button at the bottom. f) Opened up a command prompt on my PC and tested the result. "ping ls.tftp.vonage.net" resulted in a ping attempt against 192.168.1.10
5) Connected my PAP2 to one of the LAN ports of my WRT54G. The DHCP client list of the WRT54G showed me it's IP address.
6) Navigated to the IP address of my PAP2. It's running firmware 2.0.12(LS) (whereas the person on Google Groups had 2.0.9(LSd) on his/her Vonage PAP2).
7) Changed the DNS Server of the PAP2 to my WRT54G (192.168.1.1), saved settings, and power cycled the PAP2.
8) After ~30 seconds, the PAP2 performed the TFTP transfers on both TFTP servers (i.e. ports 2400 and 69). I verified this by the logs of SolarWinds and WinAgents TFTP servers (i.e. I don't have etherpeak or any other type of packet sniffer at this time)
9) Refreshed the PAP2's web-interface, absolutely nothing changed. The domain of "foo" didn't take, nor did the admin pw of "123456."
10) Attempted modifying the .xml file various ways (both with and w/o the HTML header section). No luck.
I've been told (while speaking to a friend of mine on the phone) that rcilink has already posted a reply as well. I haven't yet read it, so let's see how similar our situations are.

EDIT: Given that rcilink and I are having the same issue, unless rcilink's PAP2 is running firmware 2.0.9(LSd), I suspect this unlock method may have been fixed in later versions of PAP2 firmware. |

rcilinkPremium join:2003-12-15 Manchester, NH | reply to forrestin I came to the same solution.. I think we need a copy of the 2.0.9 firmware...
So-far, I have the following PAP2 firmwares: PAP2-bin-2-00-14-LSVa.bin PAP2-bin-2-00-13-LSb.bin PAP2-bin-03-01-03-LS.bin
Anyone out there got PAP2-bin-2-00-09-LS.bin?
* I re-read the google poster's instructions, and they note that their attempt to perform a firmware upgrade failed. They went ahead and tried the XML hack to change the admin password. This could confirm that the 2.0.9 is able to read the XML without checking the crypt key... hmmm. Check your PAP2 before messing with firmware! If it is 2.0.9, try the XML portion of this hack.. it may work for you. |
