| Anon | OOLTech -- Change in backbone provider?/poor ping Dear OOLTech,
Hello!
Sometime in the past couple of weeks, the routing of my Optonline account has changed radically, and my service has suffered with a big increase in latency to the servers I access frequently. I am writing to ask if something can be done to improve this -- is reprovisioning the line an option with cable? Can I be routed through different nodes? Did OOL change their backbone providers? Can anything be done to help my latency?
Upload and download speeds are still excellent... no problems there... it's just the my hops have increased radically, and that's really hurt my latency (I'm an avid online gamer).
It seems as if the backbone providers Optonline uses has changed. I used to be routed through Sprint a lot, now I see a lot of BusinessInternet and BBN Planet nodes. For example, to my Half Life gaming server co-located in Stamford CT (207.138.188.248), I used to get about 12 hops and 30ms ping -- this makes sense since I live in New Canaan and that's next door to Stamford. Now, in the past 2 weeks, I get 21 hops and 110ms ping -- ack! Here's the traceroute:

These are the offending, new nodes (previously was routed via Sprint or UUNet):

Network id#: 8 BBN Planet (NET-SATNET) 150 Cambridge Park Dr. Cambridge, MA 02138 US
This is just an example... it seems most of my traceroutes to servers on east coast and midwest now go Cablevision --> BusinessInternet --> backbone server sits on (example ATT) --> server. The overall result is a lot a higher latency for me.
Any info, and advice is much appreciated!

Looks like I'm going through the same servers, but my min/avg/max is much smaller. Why not run a tweak test and check/post the results. Maybe something changed?

| I've noticed the same thing. I keep noticing that BBNPlanet is one of the worst backbone providers. Any server routed thruogh BBNPlanet (for me) around 9 - 11pm, my ping jumps up about 75ms. All the servers routed through BBN are still playable but I'm used to playing with 50ms, not 125ms.
Same thing with icix.net. Though icix isn't as much of a horror story as BBNplanet.

| Noticed this too. Just ran a tweak test and my ping average comes out to 87, instead of the nice happy 20-30 i used to have. Just did a tracert.. pings suck right out of the gateway. from 10ms up to 80 in one hop. That is routed to 167.206.253.1 -- Laranzu, the last thing ya see before you hit the floor. | I just ran a tweak test »monitor.dslreports.com/tweak/blo···a=normal and my ping times are all under 20ms.
Here's my tracert to dslreports... C:\>tracert www.dslreports.com

Trace complete.
Maybe hitting nyc.speakeasy.net you're hitting those other providers, but I don't see them hitting www.dslreports.com for the tweak test (assuming it's in the same location as dslreports.com).

"If it ain't broken, don't fix it." Don't know why OOL switched to BBN...nothing (from what I know) was wrong with the old backbones.

| Re: OOLTech -- Change in backbone provider?/poor ping OOL didn't switch to BBN. Routing beyond our internet hand-off may have changed, and we can't help that.
OOL routes traffic to a few different providers, including UUNET, Sprint, Cable & Wireless, and Digex. Beyond that first hand-off selection, there isn't much we can do.
Fly42's post shows a delay within the OOL network. This can be checked out. Try it again next week. -- The Optimist says the glass is half full. The Pessimist says it is half empty. The Engineer says the glass is twice as big as it should be.
