| BitTorrent is not a network Om Malik errs in reffering to BitTorrent as "a network". Each shared file, or torrent, is a separate virtual network of its own. Nothing links them to one another. Rather, BitTorrent is a protocol, a servlet (combined client/server), and a system.
One could argue that the new search capability on bittorrent.com changes this, but it's not an essential part of the system.
As I understand it, it's also wrong to imply that BitTorrent started as a tool for illegal trading; I've read that it was originally conceived to share Linux ISOs. In any case, legitimate use has flourished alongside shadier trading from the beginning; it's not a new development. |
