| reply to Warzau Re: Maxtor HD tones, drive not working..........
You're Welcome... Glad to be of Help.
As you said, Interesting... It seems (IMHO), that Maxtor's FDB (Fluidic-Dynamic-Bearing) design may indeed have a hidden flaw...
I'm taking a S.W.A.G. here, But IF the Platter motor's bearing seals aren't PERFECT, then it's possible that some of the Bearing suspension fluid could seep out, and be "Spin-Deposited" on the Platters...
If that's the case, then that would explain the "Stiction" problems with some of these drives... The R/W Heads just get stuck to a "Wet Spot" on the surface of the platters, causing enough "drag" to prevent the drive motor from spinning up...
Anyway, I'm Glad that you were finally able to recover all of your data from it.
Cheers!

| reply to Tursiops_G said by Tursiops_G :It seems that the HD's R/W Head has become Stuck to the Platters (aka: "Stiction"), preventing the drive from "Spinning-Up". You may want to read this thread on Techimo.com's Forum: » www.techimo.com/forum/t43161.htmlIn a nutshell, that 3-3-3 "Beep" that you're hearing is the sound of the HD's Head Actuator trying to become "Unstuck" from the Platters... (and Failing) Some suggestions before Totally giving up on that HD: 1) Remove the HD from the PC, hold it flat in your hand, and give it a couple of sudden, sharp "twists" with your Wrist, which may cause the Platters to move (via inertia), and then try reinstalling the drive again. 2) If that doesn't help, Remove the drive and give it a couple of sharp "raps" (But Not *TOO* Hard!) on the SIDE of it's frame with your knuckle, or with a piece of wood or plastic, and try it again... Hopefully, this will "Unstick" the R/W Heads, and the drive will be able to "Spin-Up" again... If you're Successful in getting the HD to spin-up again, then BACK-UP your Data IMMEDIATELY, and get it replaced via an RMA from Maxtor, ASAP... You may or may NOT be able to do this trick successfully a Second time... HTH, and Good Luck! -Tursiops_G. I heard the head swivel back and forth and I think it might have worked. I am going to get a HD tomorow and try to back up data. Now which do you think would be faster and best. Maxblast copy partition or windows enviroment using copy? |

| reply to Warzau Im sorry I meant card on the actual HD itself. I think the HD is toast I put it in a external usb and it makes the same sound. My friend thinks it may be a internal electrical componant. It sounds like the HD is seeking but then it beeps. I'll try to post a sound bit soon. Trying right now to get the computer on its feet. The data is music, alot is my collection alot is hard to find. It is a very costly lesson. |

| I have a major problem. I have a maxtor HD 250 Gig.
A very unusuall problem happened. The system would not boot. So I removed all the HD and had the os, all worked till I got to this Maxtor HD. It emits a tone. Almost like a POST tone, 3-3-3. But it is comming from the HD I verified it. I concerned more about the Data now than anything. Any help in diagnosing. If I connect the HD the computer will not POST I was thinking of changing the card to see if that helps. |
