| Fastest MP3 Ripping Program?
Hi, I was wondring what the fastest MP3 ripping program is currently for a Windows XP computer? Free would be a huge plus. If it matters, I'm running a pretty clean 1.7GHZ P4 w/ 512mb ram.
Last I used rippers was several years ago with Musicmatch. Lately I've just downloaded rather that rip from CDs, but today I tried WMP 10 for some ripping. I like the interface a lot, very intuitive and clean for ripping, but I swear Musicmatch was faster back in the day?
Thanks... |

| I use Audiograbber free and easy to use. Speed depends mainly on the machine you are using to rip. I use a seperate machine for this so I can continue what I want without worry of messing up my ripping. -- I have two favorite sports teams, University of Michigan and whoever is playing Michigan State. |

| reply to cdigioia I'll throw in another plug for Audiograbber!
Another popular free ripper is CDex: »cdexos.sourceforge.net/
By the way, ripping speed depends on how fast your reader can extract digital audio, your PC's speed (CPU) and the MP3 encoder you're using. -- "I'm as sure as I can be... without any, you know, proof!" - Adrian Monk |

Wow, so a relatively modern reader can be a bottleneck? (by modern I mean something that's above 4x)?
Thanks |

| reply to cdigioia It can be a bottleneck if it's an older reader but most modern readers can extract Digital Audio at at least 20X, sometimes close to 50X when ripping directly to a WAV file. Ripping directly to MP3 slows down the average speed. An average speed of 20X when ripping to MP3 is considered excellent. -- "I'm as sure as I can be... without any, you know, proof!" - Adrian Monk |

It is very fast and accurate, and it's free.
Here is a CD ripping speed comparison test:

EAC has fast mode for speed and a slower mode for quality.

| reply to cdigioia Cool! Rhapsody does rip... and at over 30X in my case. They call it "Import a CD" so that's why I didn't see it... Thanks, dadkins! -- "I'm as sure as I can be... without any, you know, proof!" - Adrian Monk |

1 edit | The ripper in WMP - Windows Media Player is not locked at 1 or 2 x however..
In addition, it can be made to rip cds to mp3 files using the Lame Mp3 encoder.
Lame download is available here. Then right click on the inf file, select install.
Necessary registry changes are below: ---Add contents below to notepad save as .reg file.----
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Settings\MP3Encoding] "LowRate"=dword:0000dac0 "MediumRate"=dword:0001f400 "MediumHighRate"=dword:0003e800 "HighRate"=dword:0004e200
---End of registry file contents.---
A minor change has to be done to Windows Media Player- See screen shot here: »/r0/download/6···hot2.JPG |
