| SBC/Yahoo Dropped Connections/ Linksys Router?????
Hello Everyone,
I am really hoping I can get someone to help me with this problem. I have searched and really can't find exactly what I am looking for. The sad thing is that SBC can't and won't help me. They are blaming it on other companies and not even giving me a suggestion on how to fix the problem. They did direct me to use their pay support.
The problem I am having is that when my kids are on X-box live, about once a day at different times they get kicked off line. Sometimes it happens more then once a day. Also, sometimes I have to reset the modem which is in the basement by unhooking it from the router, and then hooking it directly to my main computer in my office, and then rehooking it to the router.
This is my setup: Speedstream 4100 latest firmware, Linksys Router BEFSR81 V3 Firmware Version: 2.50.2, 3 home computers hooked up through ports and 2 X-Boxes hooked up through ports. PPPOE is through the modem.
Do I need a different Modem? Do I need a different router? Is there a router that is better for this type of hookup then the one I have now? Is this just something that is going to happen and there is no fix? Should I just switch to Comcast?
Any help would be great. Below is the help that SBC gave me. I also called them with no luck as you can imagine. Sometimes I feel like I live in a Communist State. I have tried talking to Linksys support with no fix.
Semper Fi,
Bob
Dear Robert,
Thank you for contacting SBC Yahoo! E-mail Support.
I apologize for this inconvenience. I can help you to resolve your inquiry.
Robert, Linksys router and X-box are third party product and SBCIS does not support them. Please by-pass Linksys router and X-box and try to connect to Internet directly. If there is no issue while connected directly through modem then please contact respective router or X-box support.
Further I apologize, SBC Internet Services does not support Linksys router configuration. Based on my experience, Linksys router configuration requires specialized technical support from Support + or Linksys Support. SBC Support + is a fee-based technical support service that would be glad to assist you. You can reach Support + at 1-866-294-3464, or Linksys Support at (800) 326-7114.
Support + hours of operation are: 7 days a week, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST).
Here is some information that you may need to give to the Support + or Linksys technician about your Internet Service Provider:
Host Name Any text less than 15 characters. Domain Name sbcglobal.net Service Type dynamic Service Name SBC Encapsulation PPPoE Primary DNS Secondary DNS
After talking to Support + or your Linksys Support, please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.
Thank you for using SBC Internet Services.
Sincerely,

I can't seem to get a stright answer from anyone on how to solve my problem. I am going to switch to Cable if I can't fix this issue.
All I want to know is how can I stop the dropped connections when on X-box live? It happens through out the day. Sometimes maybe once a day and sometimes maybe 3 or 4 times. I have a Linksys Router BEFSR81 V3
Is there a fix in the works? Do I need to update my Modem? I have the latest update for the router. There has to be someone at SBC who can take care of this issue. Everything is hooked up right. The X-box connects fine, but it drops connection sometimes and this is not exceptable. Everyone that has Comcast Cable around here says they never have this problem. If it is a problem that is being looked into then fine, but please don't just blame it on the router and not give me a fix.
Is there a different router that works better? I need at least 6 ports to connect other computers.
I would really appreciate a detailed answer from someone. If you can't do it, could you please pass it along to someone who can. |

1 edit | Hello Bob! Welcome to the SBC/Ameritech Funhouse and BBR! You have come to the right place and we will see if we can help you out here. First a few more questions - When was all this installed? How long has it been running? Is this a new problem or has it been happening for a while?
Can you get your sync speed readings and Noise/Attenuation numbers from the 4100? Post them here so we can see how your line is. Is the 4100 doing the pppoe log in for you or do you have it in bridge mode and your linksys doing the pppoe?
Get us that info and im sure the regulars here will have some suggestions to help you out. -Riss -- I have a plan so cunning you can pin a tail on it and call it a weasel! edit:typo |

You need to provide some additional information:
1) Do you loose sync during this time?
2) What do you have the PPPoE keep alive option set to?
3) You mention that xbox don't keep connected. What about other computers in the network? Do they also loose connection?
4) What are your modem stats? Check out the FAQ on how to get that information.
5) Do you have filters on all of the phone lines? |

| reply to USMCSS Ok bob.. on the right track... First, by all means Im your phone number to dslknowitall, he works for SBC and can take a quick look at your line stats from their end. The numbers you provided from the modem end look great: SN Margin (dB) 30.0 / Line Attenuation (dB) 18.0 Very good numbers, so it looks like the line is clean, but dslknowitall can double check that from the other end.
Next, you want to change from Connection Type: Smart keep alive to "Always attempt to connect" - that works better for most folks.
Next we want to double check that no other equipment in on the network is trying to run PPPoE software or connections. SBC only allows 1 PPPoE connection per user, and that - as you have indicated- is being handled by your modem. Make sure the router, all the computers, and anything else connected to the network is NOT trying to run PPPoE software. For example, the modem has your PPPoE connection up, and if the router comes along and tries to also set up a PPPoE connection it will knock the first off line. The same with the computers, XP has built in PPPoE software in its network section. Double check that it's not being used. Thats all I can think of at the moment, Im sure others will pop up with more ideas. -Riss -- I have a plan so cunning you can pin a tail on it and call it a weasel! |

Make that change to "Always attemt to connect" and check for other PPPoE setups that should not be there... if the problem still persists then we will have to dig deeper. -Riss (Thanks DSLKIA!) -- I have a plan so cunning you can pin a tail on it and call it a weasel! |

| reply to USMCSS Re: SBC/Yahoo Dropped Connections/ Linksys Router?
As with the previous, get a new router--not another Linksys.
A few of us had this problem with Linksys Routers (especially the BEFSR41). The routers were made with bad power supply capacitors. They would cause connection problems after a year or so.
Here is what I said in March:
Somewhere on here there was a fellow who showed how to replace the Linksys power supply capacitors. I did the simpler thing, I bought a D-Link DI 604.
Until I did, my computer--and fortunately it was my computer--would drop off line every three or four minutes and need to be re-established by pulling and reinserting the ethernet cable.
Since I installed the D-Link, all connections have been solid and very much faster. I am using the same cabling to four computers, and I suspect that Zonealarm had nothing to do with the problem--in a day or two I will upgrade Zonealarm, when I am rested. My only problem in installing the D-Link was dropping one of the four ethernet cables into the rats nest of wire behind my desk. Finding it took two hours.
It is sad that Linksys is selling routers that fry themselves after a time, I learn such lessons, possibly there is someone here from Cisco who would like to participate in this discussion. Perhaps "the Sheriff, he is getting closer." (Explanation of that last line is available from me to anyone under 40.)

Friday Eve
Similar issues:
When attempting to use Skype, or when Skype is checking for updates, the connection is lost stopped. I must disconnect the modem and the router for about 10 minutes.
When sending a series of email messages quickly the SMTP service is suspended. For this I can power off the modem for about 3 minutes.
Truly annoying.
I am paying for the 1.5 to 3 meg service. Rarely is it over 1.6.
And so on.
Probably going to change to a local service provider although more expensive.

| JM47 you have different issues than USMC88. It would probably be better to start your own thread and post the stats from the modem and hardware configuration for everyone here to see and comment on. As you can see above there is a lot of excellent support on this site... |

| Thanks to all the latest posts. I have been so busy latly and forgot to change the setting to always attempt to connect. We have had a few drops, but not many. I will make the changes and see how it goes.
I am not too worried about it anymore because me and my sons now want to go wireless. Any recommendations? Charles likes D-Link. I had an old D-Link router at my old house and it worked great. I want one with as many wired ports as I can get.

| I myself prefer two separate units. One for wired connections and the other a wireless only unit. I tried a combo unit in the past and had problems (but as always, your mileage may very).
I am currently using a netgear fr114p for the router and a wireless Netgear WG602 access point. |

Bob,
I helped a friend correct the same problem. We were using a Linksys BEFSR41 V4 router. I switched the version 4 with a version 3 and still had the same problem. Like you , once he lost the connection he had to reset the modem by unhooking it from the router, and then hooking it directly to his main computer. I picked up a D-Link DI-604 router set it up for him and no more problems (by the way, the Speedstream modem is set to bridge mode). Now, I will also add that my entire home network is made up of Linksys equipment however, the heart of the system is the router and mine is the BEFSR41 version 2 (three plus years old) and I have had not one single connection drop in the 10 months I've had SBC DSL Pro service (swithed from Comcast).
Like WaukMan, I prefer two separate units. One for wired connections and the other a wireless only unit.
I'm not sure how useful this information is to you but I hope it helps in some way.

(Netgear because its just "one throat to choke" if I have problems). Im also using a Hawking wireless amp to boost my wireless signal range, it works really well! (router system is all the way on the other side of the house, and I need the booster to get 60% of my available signal for my better half's computer in the kitchen) -- No Smoke? Then it's gotta be either a glitch in the Software, or the way that you have it configured! |

| It's the linksys router as someone said, I've had to replace many times, then I've finally noticed I'm not gonna take the stupid crap they say so I through it out the window and I got the D-Link DI-524 (it only has four ports) but they do have other products with more ports. And I have a reccomendation. Don't switch to Comcast because I've done that before, and they really suck. Connection always drops, when you have a connection problem it lasts for a long time, they have to come to your house every week that's how bad the service is, and compared to sbc yahoo dsl, its a lot worser. |
