BitDefender 8 desktop folders?

Good afternoon,
I have recently downloaded and installed BitDefender 8 on my WinXp PC. I find 2 folders on my desktop after updating the program.
They are 1) getfile.dat 2) x_dtrace_log. I have deleted them everytime they appear but as soon as I update they come back.
They only appear when I update BT 8.
I searched Google and this site but fail to find any info on these folders, any opinions?
Thank you:)

Re: BitDefender 8 desktop folders?

Those files are BitDefender regular files, but I do not know why they appeared on your desktop in the first place.
I have both of them on other locations:

getfile.dat and x_dtrace_log appear on c:\program files\SoftWin\BitDefender and c:\documents and settings\xxxx user

Each file, has a copy of itself on both locations.

I have never had any of these on the desktop, but you should ask to their help support, very kind and fast responders.

Re: BitDefender 8 desktop folders?

Went to their website, opened up a chat session and found out that they have no support for the free version. Looks like I'm outta luck:(

I'll try to download another copy to see if that solves the problem, if it doesn't I'll look for another on demand scanner.

Exactly the same happened/happening to me. I think it is probably a slight install misconfig, as the files should be in user profile folder, and maybe reinstall would fix it if i could be bothered to do it that is

Re: BitDefender 8 desktop folders?

I just uninstalled it.

The tech at BitDefender thought I had a paid version at first and was going to help. When he found out it was the free version he informed me that there is no support.
He did suggest that I d/ld a trial version though.

Re: BitDefender 8 desktop folders?

Downloaded it again, same issue! I'll put up with this as long as I can.

I can't see me deleting these same 2 folders everytime I use the manual update feature.

I wonder if enabling the autoupdate feature would have the same results? I'll give it a try to see what happens and post back with the results.

Re: BitDefender 8 desktop folders?

I have the same thing happening. Except the files are appearing in the folder that contains the shortcut to bitdefender 8. I have been deleting the files.

and if autoupdate doesn't make a difference, a simple bat file to delete them?
del "C:\custom whatever path\to the file\getfile.dat"
del "C:\custom whatever path\to the file\x_dtrace_log"

Re: BitDefender 8 desktop folders?

Thanks everyone, I have BD set to run real time and auto update enabled. I'll wait and see if the problem goes away with this set up.

Cudni,I never/don't know how to make a batch file, where to enter the info and such.

I thought you were running BD free? BD free does not have a "real time" feature.

Re: BitDefender 8 desktop folders?

I have BD 8 free. There is an option to "Load BitDefender when Windows starts". Checked that box, rebooted and I now have the BD icon in the notification area.
I also have "bdmcom" in misconfig>startup. In services, I have "Bitdefender scan server" and "Bitdefender communicator" set to automatic.
Not an expert on A/V programs so you could be right. How else would I tell if it is running/not runniong at startup?

Re: BitDefender 8 desktop folders?

Opened BD up and under General page, status tab it says "Virus shield is not loaded".
So my question is how can autoupdates be enabled, an icon in the notification tray, an entry in msconfig>startup, and 2 of BD services running on automatic but the virus shield is not loaded?
Why/how does it autoupdate unless it is running? Why does it appear to be running and why the entry in msconfig>startup?
Is there some other purpose to all of this? Like I said before I'm no expert on these things.
Help!

Re: BitDefender 8 desktop folders?

One mystery solved. Went to BD online chat and had a talk with a tech named Vincent. The entry in msconfig>startup is for auto updates which only work if BD is running. All of the aforementioned entries/items that are running mean that bit defender is receiving and sending information to your PC but there is no realtime scanning.
Had ME fooled! It does everything that a realtime scanner would do except realtime scanning! Learned alot today.
To all those nice people that replied and tried to help, sorry I have wasted your time.

Re: BitDefender 8 desktop folders?

I would use AntiVir or Avast for free resident protection. And then use bitdefender for on-demand scans (BD has better detection rates than AVG, AntiVir, or Avast).

Thanks, I've been using AVG for 6 months or so, maybe time for a change. I'll give it a try.
