 | reply to Qmanman9 KDE for me. KDE 2.2.1 will be released in a few weeks. 2.2 was out about a month ago with KDE 3 due out in February. I like how it improves so quickly. I like Red Carpet under Gnome though. Wish KDE had something like that. -- Sex the Unix way: # unzip ; strip ; touch ; finger ; mount ; fsck ; more ; yes ; umount ; sleep |

I even think Gnome looks better and has better themes, but I always end up going back to KDE. Maybe this would be a good time to ask what's the good and the bad of each?

I am sure there are plenty of opinions out there but I think it's not so much good and bad as it is what you prefer.
Desktop screen shots anyone? -- First rule of fiber optics: you do not talk about fiber optics

KDE, I have the new version on Mandrake 8.1 Beta 3 on a test partition. Still looking for bugs but the new KDE and Konqueror are faster. |

Don't know if I could go back to a desktop that doesn't use true type fonts. One of the best things about KDE IMO. I hear Gnome has it now in beta so it's only a matter of time I guess. |

IMO, KDE looks MUCH more like MS Windows than WindowMaker does.
And if you're on such a Crusade to remove the word "Window" from your system, you might as well remove the XFree86 implementation of the X Window System. -- There are no stupid questions, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots. |

Uh, KDE just has Xft (X Freetype) anti-aliasing for truetype fonts, via Qt's support for it. XFree86 supports truetype fonts natively already, and other X implementations can use external font servers for support. Therefore, truetype fonts can be used in any desktop environment (or none at all), be it GNOME, KDE, or anything else. You probably just either misread something, or have truetype fonts only set up with Xft, and not as normal X fonts. |

I have never had a beef with the feel of windoze, I actually found it quite functional. It was the constant rebooting and crashing that led me to Linux and I am quite content with KDE's replication of the windoze environment, even more so then with windoze.
P.S. IMO enlightenment nextstep and some others try to hard to not be like windoze, that it makes things worse then constant crashes. -- Best word ever! |
|
 | reply to Qmanman9 First of all, I think the usage of enlightenment or CDE is relatively common, as is using no desktop environment, just a windowmanager. I think that this poll should at least give the options of Other and No desktop, since a large number of people use neither KDE or GNOME.
Also, many people (myself, for example) use different desktops/wms on various machines, so allowing multiple choices would be a good idea (as is usual in these type of polls). |

It beats CDE! (doesn't crash as often anyway). |

In Qmanman's screenshot posted can you get true type fonts in the menus, taskbar etc? What about the address line in the web browser? Can I also choose what true type fonts to be displayed?
