1 edit | [X] [Tiger] Who turns on Quartz 2D Extreme? Poll Do you force QE2D on? |
|
Just curious, I've had it enabled since Tiger was released on my G5. Video card is the NVidia GeForce FX 5200 (64MB). It makes things much more snappy and to this day I still haven't had any problems with keeping it on all the time.
If you play around with it, turn on the QuartzDebug app's "fps meter". It's pretty stunning. With QE2D turned off, moving transparent windows around and whatnot causes a huge cpu spike. Do the same with QE2D on, and the frame rate shoots up, but the CPU barely spikes.
I'm wondering why this isn't yet enabled by default... Perhaps my (crappy) NVidia card is better supported and the bugs are still not worked out on the ATI cards? Anyone with an ATI card care to share your experiences?
FYI: The Quartz Debug app used to turn it on is part of the Developer Tools. You can find it in: /Developer/Applications/Performance\ Tools/Quartz\ Debug.app Note that it only affects programs started *after* you click of the "enable Quartz 2D Extreme" menu item. |

You turn it on with the Quartz Debug tool Joe, but chances are your card in that machine will not support Q2DE. |

| reply to sporkme I can corroborate your results- dragging a transparent terminal around uses 30% CPU with out Q2DE, and 10% CPU with.
On, the other hand, 30% is not that large of a spike, as my normal usage is about 10-15%. Plus, I don't typically drag terminal windows around and around. My question is: are there often-used interface elements that would benefit from 2DE being enabled?
I think the reason it's not enabled is that virtually all systems with supported video cards also have an excess of CPU time. That, and it's still a little buggy (so i've heard- and it crashing also brings down accelerated apps) -- -Ryan What 64 bit CPUs mean for most people: OMFG HUEG NUMBERZ!!!11!! | reply to sporkme I was told you could just put this command in terminal and do the same thing
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver Quartz2DExtremeEnabled -boolean YES -- Stop Illegals Landmine the Border. |

1 edit | reply to sporkme I have a question, shouldn't I disable Quartz Extreme since I'm using Quartz 2D Extreme?
I check the Quartz debug tool and noticed that both Quartz Extreme and Quartz 2D Extreme are running. |

They do completely different things. QE was introduced in 10.2 Jagwyre, and Q2DE isn't even shipped enabled yet. QE only accelerates the compositing of windows, not any of the actual drawing. Q2DE uses the GPU to draw almost everything. By "draw", we mean figure out the pixels for a line, circle, font glyph, etc.
I check the Quartz debug tool and noticed that both Quartz Extreme and Quartz 2D Extreme are running.
That's fine. Q2DE will turn off when you quit Quartz Debug though, and it won't apply to any apps that were already running when you launched QD.
Turn on the "show accelerated windows" switch in the window list and you'll see some window descriptions turn green every so often - Q2DE being used to draw into them. |

Well, on my powerbook (15") I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700. QE2D doesn't make a marked improvement, though I haven't noticed any bugs yet. Moving around transparent terminal windows usually causes a CPU spike of about 20%, apparently regardless of QE2D. -- Verum Ipsum Factum |
