| [Express] High ping on online games
this is really weird.. my download and upload speeds are quite fine.. 2.83 and 356 respectively... but when i join an online game such as medal of honor or battlefield... it doesn't matter where the server is.. i get a 70-120 ping which spikes constantly (this is the LOWEST ping i can get).
where is the isp server? halifax? vancouver? because when i was using bell on a 1.5 mb connection which went through a quebec i was getting pings as low as 20 for chicago game servers
or could it be something with my computer settings?
i'm in mississauga btw |

| ISP server? i'm guessing you mean the router which passes you onto the game servers network. it is as close to you as possible. to a tracert to the game server IP please and we might be able to help you.
you go to start -> run -> cmd on the black dos window type tracert xx.xx.xx.xx
the xx's are the game servers IP. post the results of that and a tweak test here.
does this issue only occur with one computer? does it occur with or without any networking hardware you may have? |

| reply to TeejK I also play battlefield 1942 and BF2, I have the extreme and I still get internet connection problem, The server I play on is in Toronto, so when I join the server it say's I have usually a 17 ping to it...
If I read the server name and that in say BF2 server browser screen when I am looking for the server it say's my ping to it is like 140... But when I join, like I said earlier I get 17.. my tracert show jumping from Rogers to where his server is prioritycolo is where my pings are unstable.. if you want, because the browser is messed up in BF and BF2 just join the server, will probably be empty and then hit tab, and see what ping you get to it, heck you shold probably be less then 10 being in Toronto area.. if you still lag/internet connection problem then it is probably punkbuster causing it.. server [20id] caffeinelan ....but if you can't find it, try to connect manually to 66.199.183.36 |

| reply to TeejK I don't think its my wireless router because it's the same one that i used for dsl, i don't have my games installed on my other computers.
every server i join whether it shows up on the in game browsers or all seeing eye as 30-150 ping starts off with something like 50 ping, but within 2 seconds it will jump to 70 then 96 then 100 then back down to 70 or 50 or even 30 and shoot right back up again 100 or even 150
here are the results of the tracert to stymer's server (i don't know how to copy from cmd prompt so i'll just type it)

2 26ms 131ms 44ms 10.94.8.1 (high flux here, i did it a few more times and it reflects the kind of fluctuations i get in-game, so could it be the connection to my modem? or into the wall?)

| OK, what kind of modem do you have?
One thought that might help a tiny bit ...
Using DrTCP reduce the size of your RWIN to about 58400
Your connection is not particularly bad.
Part of the problem is that you're running a game which pushes lots and lots of small packets ... this can overflow the modem, and it can overflow the available slots on the upstream if there is a lot of activity on your node. Probably too many people on your particular node.
The problem is that you aren't going to get any satisfaction out of complaints to Rogers. Were you having problems browsing or getting your mail, then they'd look at it.
Make sure that when you're gaming that you don't have any other activities going on in the background like any P2P programs running like bittorrents especially if you're seeding or uploading other people. That will kill your performance in a game. |

| reply to TeejK its probably your wireless router. interference or something. i was just on a wireless last week. i was constantly having problems gaming. my ping would be low and then just shoot up real high, its was so annoying to play. so i fished a wire over to my computer and now my pings are good and i can play games just fine. oh and i was also playing battlefield 2, not that the matter or anything. |

1 edit | reply to TeejK its not my router, nor is it my rwin.. in fact decreasing my rwin made the ping spikes worse for some reason
or perhaps, i had changed the rwin during bigger peak hours? i notice that sometimes the connection is fairly stable, with a plus minus of 30 ms but other times my ping shoots to well over 300 *shudder.
i've checked the connection for my modem in my basement and it goes through a splitter, but i suppose it must because how else would i connect it to the cable that comes from outside?
my modem is the motorola sb5120
sbrook i think you're right, it may be the overcrowded nodes, my friend down the street has had problems as of late as well, but only for a couple games including battlefield; america's army and mohaa seems to be working fine, whereas nothing works over here.
anyways, if it is the nodes theres nothing i can do can i ? nothing like switching nodes on kazaa? is there any prospect of this getting better? |

| reply to Stymer This is in regards to Stymer's post.
It's been a documented issue for a while now the that Battlefield 2 Server Browser is broken. It will NOT show you accurate pings in the server browser. However, once you enter a server you'll see your true ping. -- You can make Time wait... Just don't count it. |

| yup I know that, and hopefully it will be fixed with the V1.03 patch whenever they release it..
But,what I was saying was that the toronto server when I join is pinging 17 ms but in browser shows 140ms + at times which makes it hard to find a server that with a working browser and proper pings I could select rather then guessing and joining a server then finding out I have a 150-175 actual ping once I joined.
As he is in the Missisauga area, the Toronto server I mentioned when joining it, should give him a 15-20ms ping.. But like myself, for some reason I still get "Internet Connection problem" with a 17ms ping here is my TR, and I am on the other side West side of london, near Delaware..

| reply to TeejK That ping you are seeing is from the Master Server to the specified server, not your ping from the server. It's really just a useful way of sorting out the really high-ping servers. It's not so much a problem with anything, but the way the BF1942 Master Server works.
Hope that helps. |

| I am experiencing this too. Rogers upgraded this problem to a server wide issue but they still haven't done much since July. The problem is that you will get wonderful download/upload speeds but your latency suffers. Also, everything is fine as long as you are in the rogers network, once you leave it, pings suck.
do some tracert and you'll see |

| reply to TeejK My Rogers gaming has been dismal as of the last few months as well. Here in Woodstock, I regularly pinged CS:S at 70-80,...and now am at 300+!!! BF2 is virtually unplayable. The problem is, I've had wonderful pings for over 2 years. What the hay has happened?? |

| reply to TeejK I had the same issue for the past few months and it drove me nuts to the point I wanted to sue EA and Comcast and Microsoft... Last night I've found a solution on Forumplanet.com. Here's how to get rid of the problem once and for all:
"Author Subject: RE: GUYS WITH LAG AND HAVE COMCAST (I think I have fixed the problem)

Edited by Gamer_Freak on Jul 20 2005 10:56PM Edited by Gamer_Freak on Jul 20 2005 10:58PM Ok guys I think I have fixed the lagging problem on Comcast.
Here is my questions for you guys having lagging trouble. If your answers are like mine then you are in luck! 1. Do you have the FREE McAfee firewall from Comcast? ------YES 2. Is your subscription over on the McAfee firewall? ------YES 3. When your subscription on your McAfee firewall was up did you go out and buy another firewall program? ------YES 4. Do you lag in the game online. ------YES
Well, I don't know if this was the problem but when I took off the "subscription over" firewall software and went back on to Battlefield 2 online ALL of the pings were back to normal!! and when I joined a game the lag was gone and my ping was back to 100-. But I had lots of trouble taking off the McAfee firewall. I had to manually take it off. I think my problem was that I had so many firewalls up the game lagged really bad because I had to go through so many firewalls. I think this because when my McAfee firewall subscription was over it went into a safe mode that had a firewall up still. But I went out that day and bought Norton Internet Security and installed that on to my computer. That also has a firewall. So over all when I got the balls to try to manual remove the McAfee firewall from my computer because I don't need it anymore. That had to fix my lagging problem!! McAfee firewall uninstall help »ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq.asp?frames···t=&pf=1I hope this will help you guys with lag and have Comcast Internet."
I also uninstalled all my antivirus SW and turned off "Windows Security Alerts" (from AskDavetaylor.com):
"What you're seeing is an artifact of Windows trying to be too smart about security (boy, that's not a sentence I thought I'd ever be typing! Indeed, after watching how busy my antivirus and anti-spyware utilities are on my WinXP box, the very phrase "Windows security" seems like an oxymoron. But I digress!)
Since you don't want to use the firewall on your Windows PC itself, you need to convince WinXP that you know what you're doing and that it's safe for you to not have the PC-based firewall running.
This can be done by choosing Start -> Control Panels -> Security Center. Then click on the "Firewall" option, click on "Recommendations", and, finally, check off the option "I have a firewall solution that I'll monitor myself". Verify that's what you really want to do and you should never see that pesty Windows Security Alert message again.
On the other hand, I suggest that you still might want to have the Windows firewall running even though it's redundant. Just set it to "loose monitoring" and you'll have yet another little boost to the security of your system.
Either way, this should eliminate that problem!" |

| Good point ... software firewalls can represent a significant load on your system causing lag. Even with just one in place, let alone 2!
A better solution is to go and get a cable router even if you are the only person on it ... that provides usually firewall capability.
Uninstalling some products like Macafee and Norton's are a real pain. Even after you uninstall you sometimes find remnants still actually RUNNING in the background on your system. |
