[AZ] VoIP Affect on Gaming?

I currently have the 9mbps / 1mbps (verified by several speed tests) Cox HSI service. I'm an avid World of Warcraft player and want to make sure that adding a VoIP service won't affect my ping times/latency, etc. I was actually running WoW just fine on my 4mbps service, which is why I doubt that VoIP would affect it, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this.

Thanks in advance!

I believe that Vonage only uses about 90k at max, so you would be fine. You might notice a slight bump in ping time, but not enough to effect game play.

I haven't noticed any problems with Vonage + BF2, although it seems if I do any streaming at low bandwidth for an extended period of time, my connection dies for a moment.

Don't forget that Cox offers an excellent voice service in Arizona. Includes backup power, so your phone won't go out if your power goes down (like many VoIP services).

The effect on your WOW performance could depend on the particular VoIP service you are using.
Check the terms of service and bandwidth usage/requirement specs for the service(s) that you are considering.

Our service is Cox Digital telephone - it is the same service regardless of the service delivery method

unlike much of the voip products you may be familiar with, our is a true lifeline telephone service.

Cox does not offer VoIP in AZ, and as Bill said, the VoIP that Cox uses is not like that Vonage uses.

I have Skype the Free one not the one with a monthly subscription. It works great. I have a friend who has a cellphone with limited minutes so he calls me on his phone
and says get on Skype and then we talk for hours. All thats needed is headphone & mic and the program on your computer. Make a handle and password. You can talk to anyone in the lower 48 states. When someone calls me my computer speakers ring a telephone sound. For those gamers who don't have Teamspeak or Ventrilo because they don't belong to a clan, this is what you need to privately talk to a teamate while in a game.

voip is iffy.

my friend has it, and he plays unreal tournament with me, and when he first got it, his ping would go from 32 to somewhere in the thousands, however, it's not so bad anymore, but I don't have it so I can't really say.

bottom line: ur adding data to the internet with VoIP.

more data=latency

period.

the end. use ur cell phones that uve all bought, for god sake. stay off the internet while talking to ur damn gf.
