2 edits | Problem - Westell used with WRT54G router. Help!
Just received my westell 6100 from verizon. Everything works fine without using my router, but as soon as I try to use it things go nuts. Unable to get a signal through the router from the 9100.
I've tried setting the 9100 to bridge mode and disabling DHCP, but no luck. I think I'm having an IP conflict between the router (linksys WRT54G) and the westell 9100: both seem to want to occupy 192.168.1.1 and I'm unable to access them after I try changing their address.
Help? Also, my 9100 renews its IP like 5 seconds after I release...
Thanks in advance, panic

You should be able to change either the 6100 or the router to use a different address. Try setting the LAN address of the 6100 to 192.168.2.1. |

| Connect computer directly to modem. Get into the modem configuration. On the PRIVATE LAN settings, change the IP address of the modem to 192.168.2.1. Then, after saving the changes, restart the modem.
After that, try again with your router. |

| That worked like a charm! Thanks nwrickert.
For anyone else trying to do this, here's EXACTLY what I did, in the order I did it. Again this is to get the Linksys and the westell to work together on an ISP using DHCP. Specifically I'm using Verizon 3.0/768 in Los Angeles.
ORDER IS VERY IMPORTANT! DON'T SKIP STEPS OR SKIP AHEAD!
1. Perform manual reset on westell 6100 and Linksys WRT54G by using button on back of units. 2. Power off both devices. 3. Connect PC directly to westell by ethernet. Do not power or connect Linksys. 4. Access the westell 6100 configuration utility at 192.168.1.1. Change westell to pure bridge mode as described in previous article. Make sure that both the Protocol and the mode are set to "bridge." This is done under VC Configuration on the Configuration menu. Allow westell 6100 to reset. 5. Power off westell 6100 for 1 minute, then restart. 6. Under the Status/About menu on the westell 6100 record the MAC address. 7. Now set westell 6100 to DHCP OFF and change the Private Lan modem IP to 192.168.2.1. Once you save, it will again reset and you will loose further communication withe 6100 interface. 8. Power down the 6100 for one minute, and reconnect it to the Linksys. Connect your PC to the Linksys. 9. Power the Linksys and the westell on. 10. Enter Linksys configuration menu at 192.168.1.1. Under Setup go to MAC Address Clone and enter the MAC address you recorded for the westell 9100 and save. 11. Now reboot your PC.
Enjoy, your connection should be live.
Hope this helps... ~panic |

| panic, i LOVE you.
i have had dsl or a cable modem since 1998, so i've seen my share of crappy hardware and service. i mean, i lived through pacbell, i thought it couldn't get worse than that. well, it did. i just moved back home to seattle from LA and while i'm happy to be back home i'm decidedly UNhappy about having verzion for my dsl carrier. my parents don't know enough about the internet to have noticed it much, but when i got home the connection kept dropping for about 2-20 sec, and then picking back up, sometimes in rapid succession, so much that i was ready to shoot myself in the head. they probably would never have noticed it, but seeing as how i basically just live here in front of my computer, it was horrible. so anyway i called, there are seriously 20 tickets in there about this problem. people came out to the house, they swapped modems at the switch, i got sent to super support. what a nightmare. so we finally decided to replace the westell 327w, and that seemed to fix that problem at least. kinda.
the modem is downstairs and i'm upstairs, and i didn't really feel like running cat5 through the entire house, so i just bought myself a little linksys wireless nic and stuck it in the desktop i had built. it was working fine before the new modem came, but couldn't find the new wireless connection, so i called about that too and ended up just having to crack the case and reseat the card, which worked but is incredibly ridiculous. if linksys and westell are having problems communicating, which do you think is the one really having the problem? i'm sure you join me when voting for the westell. well, reseating the card worked and i could connect to the network, as long as it wasn't secured. the minute i tried to secure it, the card couldn't connect to the network. unsecure the exact same connection, no problem, back on the net. now i live in a nice little suburb and i'm sure no one's going to be tapping into our wireless connection, but still.
in addition, i was getting PAINFULLY slow download speeds with bittorrent, so much so that it would totally kill the connection and i would have to power cycle the modem. i decided i'd messed with their stupid hardware enough and it was time to take out the trusty linksys wireless g router. it really shouldnt have been a big deal to change that stupid westell to a dumb modem, but i tried at least 3 different setups recommended in this forum and NOTHING worked. after 3 hours straight last sunday, i was about ready to shoot SOMETHING, if not myself in the head. so today i was feeling adventurous and searched around again, and came across this post. i'd tried everything else, and i only had a shred of hope that this would actually work the way i needed it to.
well anyway, it DID. PERFECTLY. just followed the directions, 1 - 11, and i was back on the internet downstairs on the hard-wired computer. then it was just some configuring of the wireless security, hop back on upstairs and connected without a single problem. opened up the bittorrent ports and now i'm downloading at about 5x the speed i was before.
so, to sum up. verizon hardware AND support is horrible (actually i had one knowledgeable tech, but it took 2 weeks to get to her). linksys is still king, and panic has single handedly saved me from an imminent nervous breakdown. thanks, you're a hero! |

1 edit | Glad to help klb.
Although, I have to acknowledge the help I received from various folks on these forums. Additionally, the guide at »members.verizon.net/~res08lyg/6100.htm helped me a great deal.
Anyway, glad you got the 6100 and the Linksys to workout.

| One other thing.
About 48 hours after I got things working my signal crapped out and I had no internet access. Turns out I forgot to disable the cloned MAC address in the Linksys. If this happens just unclick the tab for Clone MAC address in the Linksys router interface and then release and renew DHCP. Should work fine. You may have to "power-cycle" the westell 6100 -- which is Verizon code for turn it off for one minute, then turn it on again.
