| [scam] Free Laptops as advertised?
So it appears that the truth is a difficult thing for people to grasp. Every time people post anything that might be a little on the risky side it gets deleted about a website that the owners who do not wish others to see it. I have tried to post my thoughts about Chplaptops.com on their forum and all I was trying to do is advise individuals and the dangers of Malware, and other nasty things that pop-up in your browser windows on CHP's forum. Then the powers to be decided to change my word into something that better went with their thoughts. Had my original post been left alone this would have been finished and done, but after receiving emails that would be described as something a child would do I have decided to broaden the scope of these truths.
Read on
So it appears there are a few things that individuals do not wish you to see, while they do publish some of this in the "Terms of Usage", most do not read this document. If you go to Google.com and do a search for chplaptops. What you will find is a very well crafted advertising listing all over the web, and I do applaud the webmaster for the knowledge he has on getting the search engines to work for the website.
The way CHP's program works is:
You join and pay your money, the only thing that is guaranteed is a E-Book. Then to proceed with the the free laptop you must follow many web links to advertisers and fulfill their requirements. On CHP's forum is a window that will pop up and it is advertised as a browser helper, this is a program that is classified as Malware. For the novice malware is a type of program that can cause great damage to your computer and will be illegal in the United States very soon because these programs have little programs within them that include Spyware, Key loggers and other programs that are not healthy for your computer. These programs will slow down your computer, add in re-directs or will point your computer to another website that the programmer selected not what you want. If you think you might have this on your computer already go to download.com and do a search for Spybot, Seek and Destroy install this program and free up your computer. After we get past the nasty stuff you need to follow the links to build up enough credits for a free laptop. How long does that take, no one knows because CHP has never given anyone a laptop in their entire time on the net. I have asked for that information and they have many reasons of why this information is so secret. ON the website they proclaim themselves as three men who want you to know they will not disappear like EZLaptop, they also promise they will give away these laptops. So far since June 2005 they have had many problems. Somehow everyone's earned points were "accidentally deleted and the powers to be gave everyone 20 points across the board. They also released everyone's personal email that signed up for their service. They also have had problems with Web Hosting Companies as the last one pulled the rug out from under them for reasons unknown to others, and they were down for a period of three days trying to move the Domain Record to a hosting Company that would actually allow them to reside on their server. Another byproduct of joining all those sites to earn your points is spam and huge amounts of it, being fair I am not saying this site causes the spam, although their partners do not only cause your email address to be shared between known spammers this type of promotion also raises the risk of a novice user to have his/her computer filled with spyware, Malware, identity theft, key loggers; etc from other websites.
In the Agreement that Chplaptops.com requires you agree too, this is a few very important things that reside in this document.
1: By signing up for Chplaptops you agree to all t e r m s and conditions set forth in this agreement.
2: Chplaptops.com may, at any time, choose to edit, add and/or delete portions of this agreement and impose changes without prior notification of its members.
3: If any modification is unacceptable to you, your only recourse is to terminate your account without refund.
4: Chplaptops.com will not be liable for lost profits, lost business opportunities, or any other indirect, special, punitive, incidental or consequential damages arising out of or related to this Agreement or the Chplaptops.com program, even if Chplaptops.com has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
5: Due to the nature of our business there are many reasons why a prize would be discontinued. It is for this reason that you must agree that all fees you pay Chplaptops.com are for the e-books you will purchase and not as admittance to our free program. None of our prizes can be replaced by cash value. Chplaptops.com does not pay any money to our members via any method.
So it is for this reason I have posted this, not to impact any business but to let individuals know what they are really signing up for when they have dreams for any prize website. The only thing you receive is a electronic book, period.
As my father used to say" If it appears to be too good to be true, it is. now its up to you to make your decision. I am not saying not to use this or any website similar to this type of marketing, just understand what your getting into. Again I am not slamming this the free websites, just understand what your really doing to get that free electronic item...... |

| reply to guitarest9 Look. The malware came from an ad network which we were re-testing and considering allowing it back on the site. We lowered the advertisement categories to get topics which are unlikely to have malware, but they did.

| reply to guitarest9 No. Aaron was the one who did that and I have to admit he can be an idiot at times.
Tim is the main owner. Tim is the one who pays for the server, the domain, and the scripts. Aaron answers support e-mails (unless Aaron forwards them to Tim).
I was a member here at DSLR before when I was not sure about CHPLaptops. Since then, I have become close friends with both founders. My definition of "close" is the fact that I'm going to be meeting them soon when I fly to San Diego.

| reply to CHPForum_i386 Interesting reading. The malware aside, the fact that nobody has received a laptop and nobody knows what it takes to get one is the big red flag in my mind. The sloppiness with the site (along with the malware) is an indication of something done on a shoestring...further adding some concern.
Eddie, how about letting us know about the more important issue - when do people get a laptop, and what's to stop Tim or Aaron or whoever from changing the rules? |

| reply to guitarest9 I'd just like to answer some of the questions that have been asked in this thread:
1) Nobody has received a laptop, because the site is 2 months old.
2) People will receive their laptops after they get the required amount of credits. 1 credit per e-mail. 1 e-mail per day. With no referrals or contests won, it would take you 340 days to get a 340 credit laptop. The shipping dates are on the 1st of every other month.
3) There is nothing that can stop Tim from doing so, but I am sure he won't. Aaron does not have access to that and can only answer support e-mails.
4) It takes X credits. The credit levels are listed on the main page of the site. Each referral who joins and pays $10 is 1 credit.
5) The malware comes from an ad network which was since removed. |

| reply to guitarest9 Another small thing I wanted to say. If CHPLaptops was scamming people, why would the WHOIS information be public? And why would a phone number be listed (feel free to call at 619-804-6018, but remember that nobody will answer because you are not calling during business hours. Business hours are listed on the site.)
Sincerely,

1 edit | Netbux's WHOIS info was public as well... and we all know what happened to that.
I don't think that this is a scam. I say it's more along the lines of a waste of time.
And on top of that, I'm willing to bet that the site is going to die or disappear or that the business is going to close after a laptop or two gets shipped out.
Besides, 1 year of clicking and reading and referring just to get a crappy Celeron laptop? Meh. I can save up $500-something just by cutting out the occasional "going out for dinner" trips.

| reply to guitarest9 You can save $500 in how much time?
As for disappearing, I doubt it. Tim already has a plan for up to 10 years. Of course, the site probably won't be around in 10 years, but there are still some years with the site.

| I can whip out $500 and spend it right now if I wanted to. But if I wanted to actually *save* it up, I guarantee you that it could be done in less than a year.
Save up $45 or so every month and you'll have your laptop. Easy as pie.
As for disappearing, I don't doubt it at all. Netbux had the same story: "yeah, we're staying for the long haul." Then one day the site stops working, the guy posts his excuse, and he's outta there.
I think the same will happen with chplaptops.

I have tried to post my thoughts about Chplaptops.com on their forum....
From what I understand you got banned for admitting that you have been making "prank" phone calls to the support line. And threatening a DDOS attack on the forum owner. And I'm sure the following that you typed didn't help you much either. Here are some of the posts made by guitarest said by "guitarest, on CHPForum.com" : Now thats funny a site that rips off people saying its against the law to advertise....................... lol
Owe that hurt, your such a loser..... You have new pop ups, browser helpers, yeah right whats it called Cool web search......... Point is nothing is for free, buy the time these guys have enough points a laptop could have been purchased out right. You still have yet to give out the first laptop. Now if you look up your Domain and your names on the web you find "Scam, Cheater, etc".............
Now I won't say anything elsewhere but I will attack this place and the admin are afraid because a little knowledge is a harmful thing for them.
Here is the link to that thread »www.chpforum.com/showthread.php?t=2858798
And just so everyone knows, it wasn't just eddie (i386, owner of CHPForum.com) that called him out on his claims it was individual forum members.
said by "guitarest" : Then to proceed with the the free laptop you must follow many web links to advertisers and fulfill their requirements.
All users need to do is stay on the advertisers page for 30 seconds. They ARE NOT required to participate in offers or programs.
If you have a big problem with the standard terms and conditions we use then I suggest you look at the back of every contract you have ever signed the language may be a little different but just about all of those things that you are calling attention to in my site are there in those standard contracts. With one exception.
said by "CHPLaptops.com Terms and Conditions" : Prizes:
Due to the nature of our business there are many reasons why a prize would be discontinued. For instance should Sony discontinue a laptop we can no longer offer it as a prize. Should this happen for any reason the prize will be removed from our site as soon as possible, and will be replaced with a comparible item. It is for this reason that you must agree that all fees you pay CHPLaptops.com are for the ebooks you will purchase and not as admittance to our free program. None of our prizes can be replaced by cash value. CHPLaptops.com does not pay any money to our members via any method. CHPLaptops.com only sends out prizes for members that have compleated our free advertising program. You may only have one account on the CHPLaptops.com program at a time. Anyone found to have more than one account will have all accounts terminated. You agree that you will pay shipping costs to send your prize to you from CHPLaptops.com.
Please note the fact that the above is a direct quote from the terms and conditions on CHPLaptops.com but is very different from the stated section by guitarest |

First off I would like to thank you for not just jumping into the fray and saying that it is a scam.
And for some of us we can just save up a month or two and get a laptop, but most people can't. And it gives people something to do.

Odd.
Well that is me, Tim Core and that is my home address.
As for eddie I can only assume that is correct since I honestly do not know. Eddie and I are not partners and he is not one of the founders. Eddie Owns CHPForum.com which holds the official forums for the CHPNetwork, and while he and I are friends he does not answer to me and I do not answer to him. I will let you know that the phone number you listed in your post is not the phone number I talk to eddie on.
The reason why our IP Addresses come from the same block is because the IP Addresses were all purchased from Califorina Regional Internet ( »www.cari.net ) which is where the server that we bought is located. |
