Is Google quality dropping as it overreaches

As Google continues to roll out Beta after Beta of new tools and services, I detect a dropping off of quality and a reduction in the usefulness of their offerings. Now that they are investor driven I think they are trying too hard to continually come up with new products. Their main product - Google Search - is still the standard search tool everyone uses. But their other products are no longer the best and have a lot of competition. I suspect they are starting to spread themselves too thin to make investors happy. If any of these rumors are true, I do believe they are getting out of their area of expertise.

What email service (for free!) in the world is better than Gmail? I have yet to find one. I think Google's just now able to take a very aggresive market stance, such as challenging the big guys (AIM, MSNM, Yahoo) with the new Google Talk program. I say, way to go Google. It's about time some internet company stepped up and started giving the people exactly what they wanted, without advertisements that are flashed based annoyances, popups, or seizure inducing flashing. I have no problem with Google. Hopefully they do become an ISP. They'd be better than everyone else if they continue in their current path.

You know Rich, I agree with you 100%.

I love their search engine and GMail. My 5Mbps 20ms connection does not need a broadband accelerator, however. Looks good to investors to see such "innovation" though.

IM client lacked half of the features found on competing products, yet was met with raving adoration.

I think Google is effectively building a cult following much like Apple, wherein every inane innovation gets 300% more attention than it actually deserves. Cultists (I'm sorry, did I say that out loud?), bloggers, and analysts virally create a positive PR wall of sound investors simply love.

I think that's what most liked about it. It was a really nice clean interface without all the clutter of AIM/ICQ/MSN. I will admit that it could have used a file transfer function though.

I'm disappointed in the IM client. It's clean and simple (as would be expected from google), BUT it's missing the basic ability to do a file transfer. I expected powerful elegance from Google, not just a primitive chat program.

I haven't used any of their other products outside of e-mail, but I have to say that even their search engine's quality is starting to disappoint me. It seems like every other search I've done lately has resulted in majority commercial websites trying to turn a quick profit off the Google searches--and I'm not even counting the paid links at the top of the Google results.

Well it is a Beta, as are pretty much everything else except the search engine. Maps.Google is pretty nice and Google earth is great.

What about privacy?

You're just the type of person Google is looking for. You're thrilled because you don't get ads in your face, while basically ignoring the data mining they do on you behind the scenes. All of that personal information and behaviors are being stored on Google servers somewhere. Just hope it isn't one that gets compromised because Google doesn't have to answer for security breaches in the same way that Banks or Credit Bureaus do.

If you're a Google fan, I hope you're fully aware of the privacy issues.

That may apply to the slimmed down chat client that (gasp!) is simply a chat client without a bunch of ads, but both Gmail and their mapping service handily beat anything else out there. I can't even remember the last time I went to Mapquest or TerraServer. It's truly helpful (at least where I live) to not only get directions but to be able to look at the "hybrid" map so I can actually see what the terrain is like when travelling to unfamiliar territory.

Someone else pointed out that they are "like Apple", and I agree. Clean, useful interfaces without a bunch of ads or pop-ups. Some people seem to really want the blinkenlights and other distractions to deem an app "advanced", but I'll do without.

Re: What about privacy?

Do you think I care if Google knows that I searched for information about protein engineering yesterday? Privacy is not the most important thing in the world. Freedom is, and we have that. Let Google know that Uncle So and So searched for low gas prices the other day. He doesn't care, and I don't either.
