As Google continues to roll out Beta after Beta of new tools and services, I detect a dropping off of quality and a reduction in the usefulness of their offerings. Now that they are investor driven I think they are trying too hard to continually come up with new products.
You know Rich, I agree with you 100%.

I love their search engine and GMail. My 5Mbps 20ms connection does not need a broadband accelerator, however. Looks good to investors to see such "innovation" though.

IM client lacked half of the features found on competing products, yet was met with raving adoration.

I think Google is effectively building a cult following much like Apple, wherein every inane innovation gets 300% more attention than it actually deserves. Cultists (I'm sorry, did I say that out loud?), bloggers, and analysts virally create a positive PR wall of sound investors simply love.

I think that's what most liked about it. It was a really nice clean interface without all the clutter of AIM/ICQ/MSN. I will admit that it could have used a file transfer function though.

I'm disappointed in the IM client. It's clean and simple (as would be expected from google), BUT it's missing the basic ability to do a file transfer. I expected powerful elegance from Google, not just a primitive chat program.

Well it is a Beta, as are pretty much everything else except the search engine. Maps.Google is pretty nice and Google earth is great.
