Re: [General] Minimum Phone Service for Fastaccess Hey just signup for service, then change your voice service to "Vacation" this will drop the rate back to about $4 a month for voice, and you can keep the ADSL on the same line.
You can do this for a term of 9 months at a time. After that you can just reapply for it, and get it again
I have had it for a long time, and I and basically only paying for my ADSL + about $10 in fees/taxes. |

I've got Covad 6000/768 dry line now at my home/office. It's not really going to save you money over a regular DSL w/ POTS but you do get stuff like no port 25 blocking and freedom to run servers. For home use I'd just stick with Bellsouth. |

deceive join:2001-09-09 Carrollton, GA | I just ordered my DSL from Bellsouth yesterday. I was going to do the Vacation route and use my cell phone, but when I called them, they were able to get me a phone line for only 18 bucks. Granted it has no features, but still. Ordering online you are forced to accept their lowest "package" of 29.95 or something. Anyway, 18 bucks is not bad imho. |

deceive join:2001-09-09 Carrollton, GA | Sorry, I forgot to mention... Fees and such in GA is about 7.26 for the phone, then I believe a 2.60ish dsl fee on top of that. |

 | reply to eugenegill I just dropped my Complete Choice package and discussed whether they still had 'metered' service. She didn't know what I was talking about so I must be showing my age.
The bare minimum I could get with taxes and fees was around $22.00 here in Greenville, SC.
I may look into the vacation stop once everyone learns my new number.

(Last I checked ultra min... 30 free local calls/mo was about $10)
We also got to keep the remainining 305 AC numbers so still not impacted by 10 digit dialing for all numbers in the Keys and multi area codes... but with ever blossoming faxes and cells that is still just a matter of time. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

Can anyone confirm that BS DSL will continue to work when the phone line is on "vacation"? I called BS CS and they said:
* It's called "vacation" or "suspension". * It costs exactly half what active local telephone service costs (so the $22.90/month fee in Greenville SC would be $11.45/month). (This doesn't seem correct, since the Long Distance Access fee isn't a percentage.) * There is NO dial tone when the phone line is suspended, but the phone line is still "active". * Callers hear a recording giving out your temporary phone number. * The minimum vacation time is 30 days. * Vacation mode is switched on or off within 24 hours of your call. There is no fee for switching vacation mode on or off. * After 6 months, the phone automatically goes off vacation mode. To keep it on vacation, just call in every six months. * The BS reps disagreed about whether DSL would work when the phone is on "vacation". 2 of 3 BS reps that I talked to said DSL would NOT work, but the 1 who said it would work sounded much better informed.
I'm thinking that "vacation" mode pricing is probably as good as "dry DSL" or "naked DSL" will ever be (and it's about the same as Charter Cable's $10 "no cable TV" fee). For example, I figure the price would be: $11.45/month phone line on "vacation" (no dial tone) $25/month 256/128 BS DSL $3/month DSL fee ===== $39.45/month total |

u71n44 join:2001-02-10 Fort Valley, GA | reply to eugenegill One thing I hope you'll are not forgetting.. and this is just an example.. I have the phone line insurance that I pay for each month. It covers the 85.00 fee for them to test your phone line to include dsl if your dialtone is gone or if there is a problem with your line, and it also covers your lines on the inside of the house. If you get the bare basic service then none of this is available to you. Chances are that nothing will go wrong with your line, but in event of a disaster like Hurricane Katrina... I have several friends there that have complained of charges for Bellsouth to come out and repair lines inside their house, even tho it was no fault of theirs..Just something to think about. |

joakoPremium join:2000-09-07 /dev/null kudos:5 | reply to eugenegill It is a fault of theirs because they own the telephone wiring inside the house and as the owner they are responsible for its upkeep and repair. -- Am Heimcomputer sitz' ich hier, und programmier' die Zukunft mir |

zapy2 join:2003-07-08 Fayetteville, GA | reply to eugenegill So, does this or doeas this NOT kill your DSL?
Anyone done this and still kept the DSL? I'm inclined to believe that a call to BS Internet department is in order. Perhaps this evening I'll get a chance. |

zapy2 join:2003-07-08 Fayetteville, GA | It looks like this may not kill DSL though it may. Those folks don't have a clue as to what is going on.
I ended up getting DSL to cut me a credit for two months service to pay for DSL service while I'm gone for my 2 month "out of my mind" vacation
They insisted on that so I guess I'll apply that $65 to my bill and reduce my monthly basic $30 line for a coupl of months. |
