| [NE] Anyone in Omaha having their connection drop out?
This seems to happen at least once a day, at random periods. Basically, I will lose my connection for about 2 minutes. Whenever this happens, I take note of the date and time, and then ping my default gateway indefinitely until it finally started responding. I started keeping a log of this a few weeks ago, and currently have about 10 entries.
This is really frustrating. I've heard some other people in Omaha complain of the same thing. I was just wondering if anyone else was experiencing issues. |

No problems for me.
Do you have a modern cable modem? If it more than a few years old, you might go to COX and swap it out for a newer one.
Also, maybe your router is having problems renewing your IP address via DHCP? Again, check for firmware updates and if it is more than three years old, replace it.

| reply to BIGHUSKER It probably is that the cable modem is losing its signal. Unfortunately, it's in my basement so getting down there to check the LEDs in time is hard because the problem usually only lasts for a couple minutes. By the time I get down there, everything is usually up and running again.
The modem is a Toshiba PCX1100, which is relatively old and might be the problem. The router is a BEFRS41, which is also old, but I see no reason to replace it because I don't think it's causing this issue. I also found this discussion about my modem...seems to describe the same exact problem I'm having: »[CA] FYI regarding Toshiba PCX1100 modems
I wonder if Cox in Omaha also offers this replacement deal? We bought ours in early 2001, so I doubt it... |

| I would call one of the local COX retail locations, let them know you are having intermittent problems, and ask if they will upgrade your modem for free. I suspect they will. You will have to bring-in your old modem for the swap.
Your router, OMG. After rebates you can get a D-Link DI-524 for $20. Turn off the radio of you don't need wireless. I have good luck with this model for friends and family.

| Thanks for the suggestion. I will call Cox.
As for the BEFRS41...meh..I'm not going to be spending $20 for a device that I don't need, no matter how cheap it is. I've never had any problems with the router currently in place. All I need it to do is Network Address Translation and have some basic port forwarding abilities, which it has. It does its job. |
