Switches won't actually work in most places, it sounds like they make you log your MAC to your student username or room number or some such device to prevent you from using more than one box.
You CAN in fact utilize a router on the network. It is technically possible, though if it's against your AUP you're on your own. MAKE DEAD CERTAIN that you disable the local DHCP server on the router. Then, connect it to your dorm network and log in normally, it should see the MAC of the router, register it as a single computer, and you're good.
I also had a situation when I lived in the dorms with an idiot with a Linksys router who didn't disable the DHCP server. Didn't knock anyone off the network, but the broadcast traffic pushed half the hall over their 5GB quota. So your resnet guys aren't lying to you. The average person with a router will screw up their network. |
