| iTunes 5.0 loads Bonjour Service
Don't know if it's safe or not but I noticed that iTunes installs a Bonjour service at the startup of your computer. I installed the new 5.0 ver last night and when I booted up this morning Outpost blocked a request from Bonjour service to jump on the net. I never noticed this before in the older versions of iTunes. Anyone know if this is safe?? After looking it up it almost looks like a bittorrent type of service. |

| Version 5 of iTunes also loads the InstallDriver Table Manager service and as the previous versions also the iPod Service service, which loads even if there isn't an iPod connected. I think the following is a safe configuration: - Bonjour Service: disabled - InstallDriver Table Manager: manual - iPod Service: manual (or even disabled if you don't own an iPod).
iTunes also puts iTunesHelper and QuickTime Task in System Startup, which also can be safely disabled.
The last version also fires up mdnsresponder.exe which connects to your dns-server. I presume this executable is a part of the Bonjour Service. I deny all connections for it in my firewall.
For all the people who thought Apple keeps its software simple and effective, this must come as a huge surprise... |

4 edits | reply to Kanebrake Hi all if you need to turn the Bonjour Service off then just download this file from there ftp. From the link just click on "NO" which will pop up a window where all the files are kept and then tick on Bonjour to download »gizmoproject.com/jasmine --

| Thanks for posting the link and instructions for turning off the Bonjour service. All of that was included in the thread I linked above, but it was probably a better idea to post it here directly as you did. |

| reply to Kanebrake Bonjour is Apple's brand-name for zero-config IP. It's used by iTunes for music sharing (on your local network). It's not spyware. More info here:
Here's the Windows-specific excerpt:
Zero Configuration, Zero Hassles, Anywhere Now anyone using a Windows PC can take advantage of the effortlessness of Bonjour for free. The Bonjour Setup Wizard makes setting up a printer under Windows as easy as Mac OS X (we cant make it as beautiful, unfortunately). Bonjour for Windows includes a plug-in for Internet Explorer, so you can setup a Bonjour-enabled device without knowing its IP address. You can even print to printers connected over USB to Airport Extreme Base Station or Airport Express. If youre an Open Source enthusiast, you will be able to download the Bonjour source code to create software for virtually any platform. |

| Bonjour is very useful if you want to share music, or run airtunes, or stream your music thru a SSL tunnel. oh, and printing to a printer thats connected to an airport express. of course, if you dont do any of that, then turn it off. -- When you are leaving.. heaven is a distance not a place. --Carissas Weird |

| reply to jetspeed said by jetspeed :Anyway to disable this service from within iTunes? I feel like being force fed Bonjour along with QuickTime. You can configure all services via start/control panel/administrative tools/services. Doubleclick a service and set it to: - automatic if you want it to start it with windows - disabled if you want it totally disabled - manual if you want to start it when it's needed (this isn't always reliable).
A nice site with info for the configuration of services is »www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm . |

| reply to Kanebrake I personally didn't even want it on my pc so what I did was just reboot into safe mode, unreg one of the dlls that was marked "self-register", then delte the entire Bonjour dir.
Only prob is that when iTunes starts, it of course says there is an error in the install and I can't share music etc. You can just OK out of that, but it's annoying.
I'm pissed they would slip this component install into the product or at least now allow the user to opt-out of installing it.:( |

| reply to Kanebrake In one of the posts above someone referenced to the viopuser forum. The discussed the use of the bonjour service and claimed that it was completely safe and was simply used to check for other users connected to your network for iTunes sharing purposes. This may be true but I am running Zone Alarm Pro and it caught this bonjour service trying to not only access the internet zone(not the trusted subnet) but also accept connections from the internet. iTunes may be only looking for these subnet computers but giving the program the ability to accept foreign connections could pose a serious security risk. I think for the time being it would be best to turn off the program until they update their safety with this little program. |

it´s adware, uninstall of bonjour brings a blue-screen (and a lot of troubles)
you can only deactivate bonjour services in system or block it by firewall !
BON JOUR is now a part of your windows system, PS2 (emule) does not work anymore ?
A new network driver exists after installation of Bon jour !
Have a lot of Fun , Apple is crazy ! |

| I installed iTunes 5.0 today and later found that it completly screwed up internet access for all my networked PCs on my BT Voyager 2100 router.
It took the whole day to work out that one PC was causing it due to installation of iTunes 5.0 and the "hidden/bundled" bonjour services.
I will NEVER update iTunes again as Apple obviously can no longer be trusted! |
