| I think, more than ever, this is a case of needing to read the PDF carefully. There are caveats - I think I'm going to go into this one regarding it as a mandatory reset to defaults, even though supposedly there's no needs.
In fact, I'm probably going to hold off a few days, not least as there's a documented issue with WAN2 on the Z35.
3.65 for the Z70 is not 4.00 - it has a single enhancement "Add V4.00 firmware upgrade protection mechanism". There is reference in that PDF to 32MB RAM Z70s being old hardware version.

join:2005-02-18 | reply to DavidJWood So you are saying that I can flash my Z70 with this 3.65 firmware and then the 4.0 when it gets released?
If so are you willing to cover the costs of my Z70's turns into doorstops? |
|
Anav Sarcastic Llama? Naw, Just Acerbic Premium join:2001-07-16 Dartmouth, NS | No I would interpret that to mean the 3.65 special firmware prevents someone from accidently loading v4.0?? Just a guess though. |

1 edit | reply to DavidJWood OK just loaded 4 in my Z5 ... I like the new admin screens ... much better organized and informative. I'm going to have to get the IDP card. So far I like what I see in 4.0 -- David Mozer IT-Expert on Call Information Technology for Home and Business |

1 edit | reply to DavidJWood Ok The logs are not being sent?? I use Wall Watcher and I see the log entries as router messages but not the normal layout. If I turn off router messages in WW I get nothing in WW. OK flashed back to 3.64 XD4 and barely got the thing up and running. Had to reset, reset, reset and the flash again to 3.64 then reset and now it seems to be functioning OK. I'll wait a few releases before I try 4 again. -- Shooter Ready--Stand By BEEP ******** |

DavidJWood Premium join:2001-10-12 UK | Is the format of syslog messages different in ZyNOS 4.00 to 3.64 then? If so, the likes of Linklogger are all going to have to be fixed.

| The format itself has been maintained, but the contents of some of the log messages has changed, and some new messages have been added.

1 edit | Anav, give up the speculation and accept that for now the zw70 needs 64MB to run 4.00. Unless Zyxel surprises us, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for 4.00 on zw70.
The 4.00 firmware offers new features without Turbo card, and those features are worth an immediate upgrade if you have a non-production router. That said I'm running 4.00 in a production environment but as always your mileage may vary.
Regarding stability and new features, I've got beta 4.00 firmware running in a production environment on a 64MB zw70 and Turbo card. Content filtering is working better than ever. The IDP is enabled and working. No use for AV and AS features at this time. The beta has a few bugs but nothing that affects operation in this production environment.
Overall I'm very pleased with 4.00 firmware |

| Okay, Anav waives the white flag, I will be baCK.
Same same on the ZyWALL 35. Although with both Norton AV on the PC doing all kinds of scanning and then the router doing Kapersky AV (seems very good) and AntiSpam and IDP, the emails Were loading more slowly than before. A small price to pay really for cleaner email experience. With AS off, the emails did come through quicker, so hopefully they will work that out down the line.

| I cleaned up my email experience and entire computer experience buying a Mac Mini for email/web/graphics. That plus a 24" Dell LCD has made computing easier on the eyes and less stressful in the security department. Apple's Mail application is very nice with 500MB emails (WinXP and Outlook 2003 had constant problems) and the Junk mail feature works very well. Still have PCs but they don't get used much anymore.
My clients are running AV/AS on mail gateway (Postfix), Exchange server, and computers. While another gateway AV/AS solution on Zywall is interesting I think Zyxel's solution needs more time to mature. Your mileage may vary. |

Just flashed a Z35. Download speed before flash: 5-6mbit. Download speed now: 900 kbit. Anyone else tested throughput?
I'm off to put on the default ROM file now. |

| reply to bbarrera We can only hope! The IDP portion is what is most attractive IMHO, with the ability to stop P2P and IM chat programs. As for stopping worms and trojans I get easilty confused as to whether they are AV or IDP items or both. For example is AV based mostly on known signatures while IDP is more savvy on detecting patterns of known bad guys as well as signatures and thus more likely to stop new variants??? Do they work at different layers?? -- Ain't nuthin but the blues! "Albert Collins". Leave your troubles at the door! "Pepe Peregil" De Sevilla. Yes my D/L speed test from my ISP gets over the 1.O Mbps mark easily. Please see the above example, more than one user and of course busy time at night.... This is also Beta so should flash release to confirm....... |
