Generally speaking, during full daylight hours. First shift would be early morning through midday ... second shift is daytime ... third shift is overnight. |

I work in a healthcare facility, and the shifts are as follows:
Day / Shift 1: 0700-1530 Eve / Shift 2: 1500-2330 Night / Shift 3: 2300-0730
30 Minute overlap allows you to get in a 1/2 hour lunch and still work 8 hours, plus give time to report/debrief your replacement. |

I work at a hospital and it is much the same. Officially, according to the hospital I work at, 2nd shift starts at noon, because employees who clock in after noon get paid 80 more cents an hour. First shift varies from 0600-0900 to 1400-1700. |

I'd agree with your definition of graveyard, although the Wiki infers it to be after midnight. » en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gr ··· rd_shift» en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sw ··· ng_shift |

At my old job, the shifts would be:
7am-3pm (1st shift) 3pm-11pm (2nd shift) 11pm-7am (3rd shift)
Other places in town:
6am-2pm (1st shift) 2pm-10pm (2nd shift) 10pm-6am (3rd shift)
3rd shift, of course, usually pays a lot more than 1st and 2nd shift. It depends on the place that you're working at. 2nd shift defines as afternoon and evening hours, by the time you get off work it would be night time. At least that is how 2nd shift is defined to me. You get a 30 minute break for lunch. |

At my work, first shift is usually 7AM-4PM. Second shift is usually 9AM-6PM or 12PM-9PM. Third shift is 3PM-Midnight, and then the graveyard shift is 10PM-7AM. It even varies from these, they're never the same. |

Back in the 70's and 80's, when I did shift work at a large telephone company, 1st shift was 7AM-3PM, 2nd was 3PM-11PM, and 3rd was 11PM-7AM.
We called it a swing shift when you had to rotate among the three shifts from week to week. Or, more likely, the 2nd and 3rd shifters had to rotate while the day shift stayed in place.
I was single and I loved working 2nd shift, but I hated 3rd with a passion. 2nd was fun because you got off at 11 and caroused for much of the night. Then you slept til 11, went to the gym, ate lunch, napped and went to work. 3rd shift just killed me and made me miserable all the time. Some people like it, though.

We run 'round the clock in two shifts. Generally speaking, it is 3 to 3 on both shifts. |

On the other hand, if you're working a 12 hour day, you finish at around 15:00. There are no 8 hour days in our line of work. |
