said by pandora :It would appear google is now using active scripting to intercept clicked links. That is you believe you are going to say www.nytimes.com, but really you are going to redir.google.com/someapp?www.nytimes.com I suspect when initially implemented they were a bit slower about this. I have found a way to prevent the active script redirection from happening, and speed appears to be normal again. However heads up folks, google is intercepting ALL your clicked links off a google search result. I am surprised that it took them that long. Yahoo has been doing it for at least 5 years. Most links to internal and external locations goes through a redirector. It is the only way to get meaningful statistics. Some is used for marketing and some for design and content presentation improvements.
Also Google has a patent on sorting found results with most clicked sites presented first (as well some other criterias, like # of references to a site). Not so sure how it can be used without a redirector. It is the only way to count clicks. Now I even doubt that Google had direct links ever.
