[Connectivity] outages in Detroit area?

I'm not asking for any troubleshooting help, I'm just wondering if anyone else has been having connectivity problems in the Detroit area - specifically Westland - especially within the past week, usually down for a couple hours. This morning before work was the 4th time in less than a week that my connection was down. Typicaly, there's just zero connectivity and the lights on the modem look fine but then once I reboot it, the lights just continously cycle. I did notice before the connection went down on Monday, I had very limited connectivity (for example: yahoo might come up, but the none of the graphics would load - but other sites would take forever to load, if at all) and I was experiencing, on average, a 25% ping loss. Rebooted the modem and it would continously cycle and then magically a couple hours later, it'd go back to normal and connectivity was restored.

I haven't called tech support on this because, frankly, I consider it a waste of time. Its always the same : reboot modem/computer then send out a tech, which is not needed 9 times out of 10. Out of the 6 times a tech was sent onsite, only once was it legitimate (bad modem). In fact, last time a tech was sent out for a speed issue that was widespread in the area and I was told me entire home needed to be re-wired (and then harassment afterwards from the tech that he left his tools at my home and I "stole" them). So, I've learned to just be tolerant of the frequent comcast outages because usually they come back on after a couple hours and that's much less painful than dealing with tech support. However, 4 times in the past week is a little excessive. So, right now I'm thinking its either a network issue or a modem issue. I've actually been thinking about buying my own cable modem now that the prices are reasonable and pays for itself in less than a year compared to the $3 leasing charge, but I just wondered if others in the area have been experiencing the same sort of outages in the area before I start shopping around for a modem.
