| why does ping jump in evenings suddenly
here is a trace route... this has been happening in the evenings for about the past 3 weeks.. during the day and later after midnight the lag is gone. prob is from where i live all my connections go to here 1st so i cant online game from like 6- midnight est.. what is going on

(copying my own post from a similar thread from ELNK CABLE)
I have pretty much the same problem. I often experience high pings during prime time hours as well. It sucks to be pinging 100+ to CS servers that you should be pinging less than 20 to. Calling them does nothing as level 1 support doesn't even know what latency is. I am sure they know of the congestion on their ATDN but they don't seem keen on doing anything about it. |

| The problem is an overloaded peering connection between ATDN and Global Crossing. These can be a challenge to get fixed. Two companies have to agree it is needed, their techies have to get the capital funding approved, and the new circuit has to be created/upgraded. Takes weeks to months, unfortunately. |

| On top of the other issues for getting this fixed, is that you have to get Time Warner to care. They have your money and thats all that matters to them. Even when your speeds drop to less than half of your normal, they will tell you it's within acceptable limits. Just getting them to recognize a problem is the first hudle. |

 Check this thread: Houston Time Warner - Node Oversold.com.
Although the 'node' was not oversold, TimeWarmer had managed to max out an OC12 in the evenings. It took 3 months and emails to the exec's themselves to get the thing fixed. Amazing they do not monitor their own network.

I'm getting the same thing- it's always happened at least a little from 6pm to 11pm peaking at around 8pm --- lately it's been much much worse - I'm pinging 250-700 during these times and transfer speeds cut in half.

I also assume ATDN is the contracted backbone for NYC, in which case RR is footing the bill and is responsible for that network throughput as well. |

I don't represent Time Warner in anyway what so ever. I am just saying from experience of dealing with them, you won't get any response from Time Warner. You can call ATDN, and report slow responding routers to them. I have had to do that to Level 3, who is the backbone for us here in Columbus, since Time Warner wouldn't respond to it, since it is "Out of their network". |
