[Help] Help! Can't get my email.....

Ok, first I will qualify this by saying I don't know a whole heck of allot about computers. I can find my way around pretty ok, and I can follow instructions great, lol, but I need some help!!

I have Windows XP, my issue is with my Outlook Express 6.0. I don't have any other firewalls other than the one provided with Windows XP and I have a D-Link wired router.
I use Symantec Antivirus 10.0 full version.
Oh, and if it matters, I use Shaw cable internet.

So, yesterday I was surfing the net and lost my connection to the net and to email of course. I was on the phone for 1 1/2 hours with support trying all sorts of things only to find out that it was a problem on their end. So he told me it would come back slowly, I did get on some sites by the end of the convo. So this AM, I can surf as usual, but still cannot get email. I called, and was then informed that their issue was fixed and my email problem was a software problem on my end. It makes sense because when I start up in safe mode I can connect and receive emails. But not when all my programs are running... something is interfering.

So.. logical it's a firewall, but I don't have any other program other than Windows XP firewall. Next would be my Symantec Antivirus. I tried searching microsoft knowledge base and was told it was my antivirus. So I tried surfing Symantec's knowledge base for my version with Outlook Express as my issue. They dont' have any 'issues' with this version of Symantec 10 and Outlook Express.

I did find something in microsoft about pinging the ports 110 and 25 to see if they were listening... a list comes up of ports listening, but 110 and 25 weren't there. And it didn't tell my how to get them to 'listen', lol.

So... now I am stuck, not entirely sure what to do next.

Does anyone have any tips to help me figure this out? I am working all day tomorrow, so I will check back tomorrow evening.

Any other questions... please ask!!

Thanks so much!

What happens when you try to receive e-mails in Normal Mode? Do you get an error? If so, what are the details of that error.

Consider, at least temporarily, disabling Symantec AV's auto e-mail scanning feature, and see if it makes a difference:

If everything worked yesterday and you have made no software changes consider using "System Restore" to "go back" to a Restore Point where everything worked.

This is the error message I get:

"The connection to the server has failed. Account: '...ca...', Server: 'shawmail.vn.shawcable.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

I have tried opening my antivirus, and disabling 'Internet Email Autoprotect' but it made no difference.

I'll try the link you provided in case it is something slightly different.
I supposed I could do the system resore thing, I just wonder why it did it in the first place...

Does this help at all - »www.tiscali.co.uk/help/email/oe_···c0e.html - ??

My isp has two set of instructions for getting email - one when you're in the network, the other for outside, and you could try the other set - usually ports 465, check the box, port 995, check the box.

Also try an alternate mail server other than 'shawmail.vn.shawcable.net' and see if it makes a difference.

Can you access your e-mail using Webmail?

I can access my email by going online to shawmail and send things out from there. I just can't access from Outlook express.

I would like to try another server, but I can't remember the other ones, and don't know where to look to find them, lol.

I'm going to give the different ports a try, then look into this some more tomorrow... I have the day off.

Thanks for all the help!!

Can you post screenshots of each screen in Tools>Accounts for the naughty account? Don't forget to blank out your email address before posting unless you want the world to know it .

Paraphrasing the instructions in the link provided by Sweet Witch, try the following to see if you can connect to the mail server:

1. Click the Start button then RUN type in cmd on (Windows NT/2000/XP) or Command (Windows 95/98/ME). This will open a new command prompt window, with white text on a black screen.
2. Type in the following exactly as it appears.

telnet shawmail.vn.shawcable.net 110

and then click the Enter key on your keyboard. You will then be connected to the email server.

3. Post a response indicating whether step 2 connected or not.

If you receive any popups asking for permission when you perform step 2, they will be from the application which is probably blocking Outlook Express.

If you receive no popups and are unable to connect either you have something blocking the ports or your mail server isn't working or shawmail.vn.shawcable.net isn't the correct name.

If you are able to connect, Outlook Express is misconfigured. Try setting up an additional account with the parameters as they should be. Hopefully reentering things will make clear what is wrong.

I tried connecting to telnet shawmail.vn.shawcable.net 110 and got this response:

"could not open connection to the host, on port 110: Connect failed"

Any other ideas?

Try going here - »support.shaw.ca/servernames.php - to find another server name and see if that works.

Hmm... tried all those, still can't connect.

I did try "telnet shawmail.vn.shawcable.net" without the 110 on the end, and I got the same response of could not connect, but it used port 23.

Ok. Just noticed that you mentioned that this works from safe mode.

If that is true, you should turn off all of your non Microsoft services and all of your startup items using msconfig. After doing this, restart and test your email. It should work. Then you can reenable some items and retry until you discover which application is blocking your connection.

Actually, if it works in safe mode and you aren't aware of any other possible port blocking software, there is a good chance that you have malware on your system. If that is case and you've tried what I've suggested above, it may renable itself (ie. when you go back into msconfig, entries that you deselected will be selected). If that turns out to be true, it may be quicker to post or send a HijackThis log so that we can see what is running on your system. Before running HijackThis though, be sure to reenable all the stuff that you've toggled off.

Ok, I closed all programs except microsoft programs and restarted. I could then check email fine with outlook ex.

So I then turned on my symantec and re-started... and now I can still check emails just fine!

I don't have a clue what happened there... but I'll list all services and programs I have de-selected for start up.

Services:

Adobe
IPod service
IS service (?? don't know what that is)
Kodak software
SavRoam (?? don't know what either)

Programs:

ITunes
Back Web (sounds suspicious to me, but it was already de-selected)
Panicware pop up stopper (that was already de-selected too)
Real Player
ITouch
Adobe
Dataviz Messenger (not sure what this is)
Ebay toolbar (this is removed from my system, but obviously stil in registry... it was deselected already)
HP (printer software for scanner)
Kodak
Lotus
Hotsync

So... anything there seem like it would interfere with ports? I don't understand it, lol.

By the way, if any of you could enlighten me on the ones I didn't know that would be great! LOL!

This - »www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?···t=&type= - is the most comprehensive list of start-ups I've found.

Dataviz Messenger is for Documents To Go...for Word on your palm?

Back Web I believe is for your HP printer, although it could from elsewhere. Check the path for the file being launched.

SavRoam is for Symantec. Try reenabling it and see if you can still check email.

IS service? Not sure. What is it's path? I'm betting that it or SavRoam is the cause of your problems.

Keep us posted.

Since you mention Norton/Symantec, this might be where Back Web entry is coming from:

Use a fully qualified URL like the one below, not the shortened "shawmail"
