| Not Starting Off Well
Hi,
I have had Earthlink DSL for several years with no major issues. A week ago I signed up for SBC DSL. My due date was yesterday(Sept 15). I called SBC at 10 PM and reported that I still did not have service and had not gotten a green light. I was told that SBC had until 12:00 to complete the line and it was still "in progress". I called back at 12:30 and spoke with a tech. She had me check the modem and the connection. She said she would open a ticket to have a technician test the line and they would call me back today to report the results of the testing.
Is this typical with SBC? I had no problems when I connected Earthlink DSL for the first time and I am getting a little discouraged. Is there anything else I can do myself?
Here is my equipment:
Computer is running XP Home Modem is a SpeedStream 4100(Power and Ethernet lights are green, DSL light flashes red) There are no other phones or equipment on the line. I have tried with filter and without.
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

| reply to Northwynd0 We've had SBC at work here for years and nearly everytime I have had to call customer service, it has been a very unpleasant experience. Unfortuntely, it is the only service available in our area, so we're stuck with them. But because I've had such consistently bad experiences with thier customer service, I refuse to use anything SBC/Ameritech/Cingular related personally. |

| reply to Northwynd0 Hi,
Thanks to both of your for posting. I was apprehensive about signing up with SBC and hoping I did the right thing. Unfortunately I need to use my connection for work so I can't wait too long for SBC to get my connection working.
Thanks Again |

| reply to Northwynd0 OK, if they have missed your due date, and you have checked everything obvious at your end (filters installed correctly, modem on correct line, power cycled modem, etc) then head over to the SBC Direct forum »/forum/sbcdirect where the official SBC Techs can take a look at your order and your line status (they beat the pants off of telco support) and can give you an idea of what is going on. In SBCDirect you can post your phone number and other info. (Read the posting rules in there, as they are specific.)
The delay may have something to do with your changeout from earthlink, I dont know, but the guys in SBCDirect will fix you up! -Riss -- I have a plan so cunning you can pin a tail on it and call it a weasel! Anyone who takes any of this seriously, deserves to! |

Do you have dial tone on this line at the jack where the modem is plugged in? Is this on a new phone line?
How long did you have ELN DSL, and was it on an unbundled loop (no dialtone) or lineshared? Was it provided by Covad? Why did you switch to SBC? Did you move? -- Let me see you make decisions, without your television. |

| Hi,
I do have a dial tone on the line where the modem is plugged in. It is not a new line. We have lived here approx. 8 years.
I had Earthlink for almost 4 years. It was lineshared and I believe provided by Coavad.
I switched to SBC because I ordered one of the bundled packages. I will save almost half of what I am currently paying each month. I did call Earthlink and try to price match and had no luck. Perhaps I got a misinformed rep but he claimed they had nothing to compete with SBC. I had been with Earthlink since 1998.
I did receive an Order completion notice for my DSL in email today.
Thanks for all the help and replys. I have posted in SBC direct. |

1 edit | Hmmm...ASI (SBC) can't be active on a line Covad is using so they (the CO/RT tech) will remove the Covad facilities when they get they get the SBC order. There are procedures which have to be followed for a CLEC cutover to go smoothly, though, and one of those is Covad needs to cancel their existing service on this line before SBC connects you. Otherwise the process can turn into a three ring circus of angry clowns. See the "funhouse" references in this forum.
The SBC Direct folks can handle this though. Hang in there...this is not normal. In the meantime, read this for some insight: »Ameritech - SBC FAQ »Switching from Covad or another CLEC to SBC -- Let me see you make decisions, without your television. |

2 edits | reply to Northwynd0 I hope you have taken the advice here and posted in the sbc direct forum already? That is where you are going to get your absolute best results. You will need to excersize a little bit of patience but they will get the most out of your connection that it can handle, guaranteed. You will get the straight poop from them and if there are any provisioning problems due to the change over from one carrier to another they will both tell you where you stand and quite possibly expedite matters somewhat as well. |
