I went to the Best Buy Store bye my house. As I walk up to a salesperson, I ask if he know anything about the New Version Of Cable Modem.. For the Linksys. He told me he had no clue.. So after a Couple of salesperson's. Some of them Tech Ones. I thought to myself, Best Buy has gotten some terrible people. But then again I could have gone a bad day. But after I check a couple of Box's.. I did see some said on it "Version 3" or [v.3] So I thought, I guess I have to get that one.. But then I saw some without any version on them... they said something like 4122040c. It didn't say what version it was. Being a person that used to work for them.. Knowing about retail.. could only mean that has to be either a newest one out or a Version 2. So I decide to buy it, and see what version it was. If it wasn't, I knew I could take it back, get another Modem making sure it said version 3. But when I got it home.. I was surprise. Yes it the New Version. The Version is writing on the CD disk, and also on the manual. Also It writing on very small letter on the Modem itself. So if you are looking for a new Modem. In the Line of the Linksys.. the newest one won't say on the Box version 4.. It mostly like have something else, not saying you will find a box that does say Version 4 on it. But just keep eye out for those not label that. I glad I got a Newest version. But I will install it later next week, when they have everything patch.. |

I was just in BestBuy looking at a shelf full of BEFCMU10s that had no version # on them. I had asked the salesman if he knew and had no clue.

| I haven't install it yet.. going to do it this weekend. waiting to see how the new speed come out.. said on forum, they still working on the patch. This Modem will have to wait.. But it does say version 1.12 on the disk, but I think that old.. but on the box say. DOCSIS 1.0, DOCSIS 1.1, Certified, DOCSIS 2.0 Vertified, 802.3,802.3u USB 1.1.. but I know you know that..
But when I do find out I let you know.. hope it better.. |

1 edit | The v4 is shipped with DOCSIS 2.0 firmware.
The problem with the v3 is that it could have DOCSIS 1.1 firmware if older and DOCSIS 2.0 firmware if newer. It doesn't matter if you have Comcast, because they are DOCSIS 1.1. For me having Adelphia which is DOCSIS 2.0, a v3 would hold me back with our new Extreme tier of 16000/2000. And, since my ISP doesn't support the Linksys, no upgrade would be pushed.

| I just got a reply back from Linksys on how to Identify a v4 vs v3.
Thank you for contacting Linksys Technical Support.
You can differentiate the BEFCMU10 version 3 from BEFCMU10 version 4 through the lights on the front panel of the device. With the version 3 under the Internet you have 2 LED lights labeled cable and activity. With the BEFCMU10 version 4 under the Internet you have 3 LED lights indicator (DS, US and Online).
You are supposed to be able to see this light configuration on the picture of modem on the box.

Found a version 4 at Best Buy in Bellevue WA. The Kirkland CompUSA still has the older version in stock and no version 4s, just in case anyone in this area is interested.

The difference I am seeking is being able to receive the upgraded speed I just received. With my old RCA DCM 235, I lost speed with the upgrade. Used to consistently average 780-800KB actual download speed with the 6600-768 caps and my upload wasn't all that great either compared to what others with newer modems get. Now I generally see 600KB/sec down, around that.
I'll probably swap it out before I sleep tonight. I suspect I'm procrastinating because I might have to install that software and I really don't want to do it.

OK, got it installed (another story for another day), not tweaked yet but did get 1.00MB/sec down from 55MB of a large file from Microsoft Download. Much better than what I have seen since the upgrade.
