| Unexpected iPod Death
This morning I attempted to turn on my 40 GB 4G iPod, to soothe my ears with the usual mix. For over a year, this phenomenon has gone flawlessly everyday. Today was different.
I noticed the hard drive was making more noise than usual, and a lower pitched noise at that. I attempted to play a song, and to my surprise it played the first 30 seconds.. then it locked up.
I attempted to reset it, but was greeted with the dreaded folder with the ! mark.. with a link to Apple's support page.
This iPod is out of warranty, and was begging to be replaced with a new black 4 GB nano. Having said that, I am curious if it's worth anything. Might this be worth putting up on eBay and selling as non-working?
Everything else on the iPod is flawless. It has it's usual scratch here and there, but aside from that it's in good condition.
So I guess my question is... should I put it up on eBay? If so, how much do you think I could get from it? Or is it just not worth it?
Thank you

| reply to AHENDY With iPods, I have come to expect the unexpected... I have have had every iPod I have ever had die on me (all but one was hard drive failure). My newest one is now begining to freeze up for 30-60 seconds regularly, which will mean back to the genius bar for free iPod #5.... -- I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. - Steve Zissou |

Hmmm, this makes me want to get AppleCare. My original warranty expires in December. I've alredy had it serviced/replaced once. At C$71 for 2 years protection, it's a great deal. |

| reply to AHENDY I'm concerned, I keep hearing bad things about these iPod's involving sudden death
I just bought one, and I love it! If it dies on me, I think I might cry.

| reply to F walker I have had one iPod....an original 5gig that I pre-ordered before they were released. It's worked flawlessly for me for 3 or 4 years.....but mine got dropped in a bucket of mop water and sat there for a couple minutes. Maybe that's the key to making your iPod last forever. Just soak it in some dirty mop water for about 2 minutes or so.;) My wife bought a shuffle recently, and it's doing fine too.....though I expect it to die any minute as she didn't purchase the extended AppleCare Mopwater Plan....from me.....for $79. She better not say I didn't warn her. |
