Qwest always is the last to do anything anymore. Here in Omaha area, Cox Communications and Qwest are 2 biggest high speed providers. When I see Qwest advertising a 1.5mb connection and "slamming" Cox because of the old issue of your connection is "shared" and back then it got rough in evenings to download at good speeds.
Cox fought back and increased their speeds to 9/1 here at least. Qwest has nothing on Cox except to trick the average consumer into thinking the old problem with Cable internet is still big.

| Worst thing is that Qwest generally uses their 256/256 tier in comparison to the Cox 4/512 tier so it sounds like it costs less. It was not until they started this $29.99 promo that they used the 1.5/896.
I have both, but I need a static IP.
Cox must feel threatened in some way to have deployed the 9/1 tier without need.
They both lie, what I love is how Cox will lie for no reason when they have the lower price, for example ads that reflect you have to rent the modem from Qwest and including it in the price and failing to mention you have to BUY the modem for Cox.

So lets compare cable to satellite shall we? I recently, in the last several months, switched from Comcast cable to Directv. I pay $45.99 a month(includes 1 reciever) and get 161 channels with the total choice plus w/locals. I have 3 additional boxes which cost me 4.95 each a month. My total bill presently is $64.62.
Now I do not remember what the cost Comcast was for something similar, so i actually just called them and spent 10 minutes on hold to have actual numbers to share with you.
Comcast has their Digital Plus (which the salesman had to actually count the number of channels because he did not know)which offers 130 channels for $60.65. Now if you'd like to recieve all of those channels on additional tv's, you'll need to spend $8.95 for each reciever. If not, you only get 78 channels which are analog and not digital.
Thats $87.80 for Comcast(130 channels)on 4 tv's and $64.62 for Directv(161 channels)on 4 tv's. But wait. Thats doesn't include all of the taxes and fees associated with cable.
So if we are going to offer opinions, lets back them up with facts.

Qwest is bending over backwards with an advertising scheme designed to draw customers away from Comcast HSI to Qwest DSL. Their website advertises a price that is $25 more per month than my Comcast cable HSI and 4.5Mbps less in bandwidth. The advertised TV special of $20 per month is only for the first three months of service, then it reverts to the regular price which they don't advertise on TV. You have to visit their cryptic website for the actual price.
Qwest can not compete with Comcast in the long run. The only people with Qwest DSL that I know of are in unincorporated areas of counties where Comcast will not go. |

I like when Cox has a commercial that names all of the things that you can't get on satellite, like all of the HD channels they carry.
With DirecTV, I have more HD channels than I do with Cox... Yes there is a tiny little antenna to put behind your TV or in the attic or attached to the dish... Technically the signal doesn't come from the sky... It comes over the air which does not require DirecTV or Cox. But as I tune it in, it works the same as the Cox programming, all in the same program guide.
(Explained: When I lived on my own, I had DirecTV, current living situation requires that I use Cox.)

Ok lets back them up with facts. And since I don't really care about either (I was a DirecTV sub until the trees grew into my line of sight) to me they are the same.
All I am saying is Cox and Qwest quote "Deals" proclaiming to have the best deal, and neither really is. It's not that they have to be cheaper, they make crap up to make it look cheaper from a long shot. Qwests latest deal is to offer prices for a year with the understanding of a 25% price increase after the year.
I don't really care about any channels above 70 so I can care less if d* offers me 161 channels, 70 on Cox run me $38.00 and I save $10 for having a bundle, so I get everything I want for $28 on 7 TV's.
I pay 1/2 what you do, DirecTV will not let me have a package for under $45/mo.
To each their own, and they do all lie. |

Add to your 130 channels another 45 of digital music to that for a total of 175 for your cable company. Dish counts their music channels in thier total number offered so you have to do the same math for cable.
Also, your $8.95 may be in your area, and that's just that.. YOUR area. This board reaches the WHOLE U.S. and beyond. Not all areas have the same fees assocaited with extra box rentals. Here's it's $4.95 per month and with that you get pure digital service, 2 - 999.
And, as for your comparison, there are other factors where cable is a better value since yes, even those non-box'd tv's do get full basic in analog, you don't have to pay a monthly fee on it. Once you go beyond that 4th TV, and trust me, MANY people do, and find out the cost assocaited with it, they find themselves with putting up with 4 tv's. Not to mention that you can't have more than 8 boxes per house with satellite period.
Now, while you are at it, why don't you break down exactly which channels you are getting with direcTv's 161 channels service vs. the comcast 175 channel service. There are MANY channels in the cable line up you speak of that are not in the intro package of satellite that causes people to go to higher levels of service which raises the bill even more. Do a side by of what's offered and when you boild it down, you are simply buying a "number" of channels. They market it by numbers. I like the OLN network. In satellite, I have to purchase it in a much higher tier of service since they considered it a sports channel where on comcast it's in the $45 basic service. On Satellite it would have cost me about $22.00 a month (mind you this was a few years ago on the prices but the channel remains classified the same today)
You want pure digital and have few channel needs and don't mind your house wired to the gill in many cases and a contract and save a buck? Go satellite. You want more of the normal channels with some flexibility and to use your own tuner and the option to go digital and pay a few bucks more? Go cable. Also, in many systems you are starting to see the ADS going into effect where people can get pure digital cable mixed in with analog cable in the bedrooms or garage/workshop... choices choices choices...
The bottom line is that for some people cable will work while for others it won't and satellite is better. Both services have their purpose and both need to survive.. Trying to justify what is a better choice based on your numbers doesn't cut it al all no matter how you line it up as people have different needs and budgets. I personal couldn't care less what they are charging as money isn't an issue for me, I shop by what works in my home for me. I think it's funny how people must think they are so hot because they posted a thread on how much they save with satellite while many others could care less. Isn't choice great?

The 130 was just that. 130 total channels period. My house isn't wired any differently than cable was. They used the existing wires. Rather than the drop from the pole, it's a line from my dish. OLN is included for no charge with total choice plus.

Wrong, I stick with Qwest DSL because I have more upload and can get static IP's with my ISP. You'd have to pay me to go to Comcast! |
