| Qwest Modem question
Hello All, I just ordered Qwest DSL & wanted to know if they are still shipping the Actiontec 701 or are they shipping a different one.
Also before they do ship the modem out, could I call & have a different modem shipped. If I can have a different modem shipped, is there a different modem that I should try to get or is the Actiontec good enough.
Second, I would assume that I can make the actiontec a standard modem & use a different router. Please correct me if I am wrong
Thanks

| The Actiontec GT701 is still the default router. They don't have the option of providing any other model right now. Supposedly by the end of the year they will have the option of providing a 2wire modem. My understanding is that the Actiontec will still be the default modem, i.e. they are not replacing the Actiontec, but will just have a second modem option (probably at a higher price, since the 2wire they are currently testing is a higher end model, with much better wireless features).
If wireless isn't something you care about on the Actiontec, then in general it is a good enough modem. You of course have the option of not buying the Actiontec from them and purchasing another modem on your own. Even though the Actiontec is the only one they provide, they supposedly still support a few other models like the Cisco 678.
If you want to use a different router with your Actiontec modem you have two choices (one of which may not actually work):
1) You can enable "transparent bridging" in the Actiontec via the advanced setup. However this means that you cannot connect via the support PPPoA and will have to use PPPoE from the other router. Qwest doesn't officially support the use of PPPoE, but it appears to work in most Qwest locations. Your mileage may vary.
2) You can put your other router in the DMZ of the Actiontec. This is like a default route for NAT, i.e. all ports will be forwarded to the other router. This means that you will be "Double NATing". You need to make sure you turn off DHCP in the Actiontec and also make sure that you use a different subnet on the other router (i.e. a different subnet from the one connecting the Actiontec to the router).
If you don't like either of the above two options there is a third option if you buy a different DSL modem router. Some modems have a feature that allows you to export the external WAN address to your router. This feature has various names (DHCP Spoofing, DMZ+, etc.) depending on the model you buy. |

| reply to cscottm I have been using the Actiontec for almost a year with no problem. I haven't upgraded the firmware, still using the 5.5 firmware. I use wireless with another computer, and it seems to work ok as well. Just curious, why do you want to use another router? |
