1 edit | Counterspy..Sucks I'm sick of this damn program, I've been putting up with it for the last month and it keeps crashing with the attached error message. I'll go download a new setup file, reinstall, reregister it will be fine until a new definition update is released, I'll install it then I get Visual C++ errors everytime I try to use update, or scan for that matter.
I've even contacted technical support about it, what could they do? Send me a link to download the evaluation copy..oh yeah thanks for the help Sunbelt.
$20 for a progam that doesn't even function properly. If anyone has any suggestions what I can do to get it working CORRECTLY and keep it that way, let me know. -- - paranoidxe (txtfiles.org) |

 | reply to paranoidxe Hi,
I am sorry that you are having this problem with CounterSpy, but haven´t you thought that maybe, you are having other problems with your PC, or with Windows that are causing this behavior?
Take into consideration that most people who uses CounterSpy does NOT have this particular problem, therefore, putting the blame on CounterSpy is not going to solve it and besides, their tech support is well above average. Why don´t you Google "Assertion failure" or Visual C++ ? Maybe you´ll get some answers and will discover that the problem might not be with CounterSpy. |

I've never gotten help from the president of a company. Let's see, where's that last e-mail I got from a software company...
Dear Brad, Sorry that we just sold our company. But management here at Giant Software could not resist the huge payday. I understand how aggravating it must be that this transaction occurred only days after you purchased a license for Giant AntiSpyware. Sorry about that. Re: Counterspy..Sucks My name is Olga and I am the Consumer support mgr for Sunbelt Software. I would like to address the definition corruption CounterSpy seems to have on your machine. First steps, lets try this.
Right click on the CounterSpy icon on the lower right of the computer next to the time and choose shutdown.
Then go to the following folder under my computer.
C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy Client Then delete the following files, you will need your key handy.
gcuserdata.gcd gcthreatauditthreatdata.gcd gcthreatauditscandata.gcd
Close the my computer window.
Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools/Internet Options/Temporary internet files and delete files-cookies / Close Internet Explorer
Open CounterSpy by double clicking the icon on the desktop.
If you are prompted - click on later or skip.
Be sure you are connected to the internet. Once you are all the way into CounterSpy, where it shows your current system status, click on help, about CounterSpy. You should see the current definition version next to spyware definition version. Click on register, choose I have already purchased a license and enter in your key. If you are unable to register after entering your key, try downloading the files direct:
You can email me direct in support if you still need assistance with CounterSpy. I will be happy to assist you with any other questions you may have.

Re: Counterspy. Counterspy is a rock solid program. Run side by side with MS it picked up about fourty missed malware apps (including 12 keyloggers).
It is a recommended application for anyone's system I clean. |

2 edits | reply to DaHen I'd be willing to bet he's using 98 or WinMe. I had trouble running CounterSpy on a WinMe PC - it crashed, could'nt complete a full scan and was generally unusable. And this was on a very stable, fully patched WinMe PC that had no other software installed other than MS Office and NAV 2005.

Re: Counterspy. Steve, good points. There has been a significant amount of work on the Win 98SE/ME support in CounterSpy. The upcoming release of version 1.5 (end of month) should handle the issues you found on those platforms.

Re: Counterspy. I've got Counterspy here and have had no problems with it either.
I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Alex (and his team) at the Sunbelt booth when they were at MS Tech ED 2005 in Orlando in June. I was really impressed with the way they dealt and interacted with their customers (and those stopping by for information). Then, they invited me over to visit their offices in Clearwater where I spent a week (MiniSummit on Spyware) visiting the Research and Developement Dept. and they have some really talented and dedicated folks there. I was equally impressed with not only the fever of their quest to kill spyware but the quality of their operation and care for their customers. Alex and crew also keep an interesting blog on spyware »sunbeltblog.blogspot.com/ that shows you how keen they are in keeping up with developing trends and being "in touch" with people. I think we'll see better and better things from Counterspy as Sunbelt truly likes to be visible and "out there". I saw a great attention to detail and the quality of their product development. They are BIG on getting it right and really do hate spyware, true to their motto: Hit Spyware HARD They do go after it with a vengence.
I heard lots of stories that were similar to those I have been through when helping neighbors, friends and family with massive hits of spyware infestations. They go through the same in their personal lives too, stuggling with the growing threats of spyware and other malware - just as we do.
It's a shame this topic was titled this way just because one person had a isolated incident they couldn't resolve, but I think it is great when Sunbelt responds right away to get the job done.
And no, I don't work for Sunbelt. I just admire the way they don't have their heads in the clouds and stay accessible when issues arise. Oh, and their growing research team is impressive too. LOVE the online Research database, Alex - that's real useful for all of us! »research.sunbelt-software.com/
Thank you very much!

Alex Eckelberry Sunbelt I am one of those unfortunate enough to have tried CS and had the same problems Steve had. I'm also a WinME user. Can i ask that when v1.5 comes out will i be able to trial it. Or will it chime up that i've already had my trial and i need to register it. Some software says that once you've trialled it then thats it. If i trialled version 1 and it's up to version 4, it still says i've had my 15/30 days. Will this be the case with CS?

Ok its getting more complex, the program responds fine as LONG AS I DON'T try to update the definitions. Even when the definitions fail to download thats when this Assertion Error starts to occur.
Its important to note that even after using the Update Program and the update clearly fails, the spyware definitions don't change. -- - paranoidxe (txtfiles.org) |
