Re: No, you missed nothing

I did pay for iTunes songs -- and plenty of them. No, I hadn't yet put then onto a player because I don't have one yet. I am somewhat computer savvy--when I was asked to upgrade as I had done before I did not see anticipate the ensuing crap-storm and I am just waiting for Apple to develop a fix that lasts long enough for me to save these files to a disc or another format if this is even still possible.

Well for those who are interested, i did have my music backed on a Firewire drive, but that decided to go down too.
So, the reason i plugged my ipod into my PC was in an attempt to backup it up onto yet another drive, using the third party software. This ,by the way won't let me upload my paid-for music, and i can't open Ipod in Explorer, presuambly because it was set to auto-update and not "use as a hard-drive".
I'm not sure what third party software you are using? Is it Jhymn? The inability to open in Explorer is normal, but there is software out there that will let you use it like another hard drive (for the Apple and Windows).

Again, paid for music should be backed up without any trouble with the built in burn disc function.

Computer keyboards are very sensitive. You do not need to apply a lot of pressure. Banging the keys only serves to wear out your keyboard and you.

except you can't upload the tracks from you're ipod officially, and yes i know there are a zillion unofficial programs to let you do this, but what do you do when you can't open Itunes, or uninstall it, but it still pops up whenever you plug you're ipod in, and then tries to synchronize.... i.e because itunes thinks it has no music in it, it tries to wipe all your music from your ipod.
Nice.
Oh, and you can't turn autoupdate off because you can't access itunes normally.
Presumably you would fix the iTunes issue before doing some less than intelligent thing like plug in the iPod to sync with a broken application. Or use another computer. iTunes 5.0.1 is out to fix some issues but there are also a lot of people who haven't run into what you describe. Another way to copy the music without a third party application in windows is to simply open up the iPod in explorer and drag out the files from your music folder. You won't get the meta data but you'll have the music. If you move to another PeeCee then all you need to do is register that machine to play the ITMS bought songs. AND... as with any data there is no excuse to a lack of a good backup plan.

If it happened to me I would be upset too but at some point I have to ask what could I do to safeguard my investment.

iTunes isn't the only music software that handles it like this. Every DRM enabled player has some restrictions on it, no need to single iTunes out. If your only backup is what is on your iPod then losing all of your purchased music is inevitable. You need to practice what Apple has been preaching with iTunes. Backup, backup, backup. It takes you all of 2 minutes to burn a cd or dvd with all your store bought music on it.

If I had purchased music through iTunes I would REALLY have reason to be pissed off.
You would also have a copy of the music on your iPod or other mp3 player.

Since installing iTunes, my computer has been completely hosed up. The system crashes about one minute after I log into windows and reboots automatically. I can't uninstall iTunes from safe mode because it says the MSIINSTALLER is not working. What the hell am I supposed to do?! Well, I know there are things I can do, yet this is unacceptable. If I had purchased music through iTunes I would REALLY have reason to be pissed off.
