And that's YOUR choice. I have been eagerly awaiting this release for a few years. This game was GREAT on the old engine - now that it has completely been redone on the source engine - I can't wait!

It will be interesting, however, if their servers can handle the push.

Re: Feh

I never understood why they sold it with Half-Life 2 packages and it wasn't going to be released until a year later.

I just hope Steam doesn't come to a complete halt like it did when CS:S (beta) came out.

Anyways, I'll be buying it this weekend

Pfft. With the track record of users, everyone will be trying to download it at the same time. Decentralizing would divy the load among many content servers. I know Steam has loads of content servers, but still, the more the merrier.

But, remember, you're not buying it, you're only renting it. As soon as Valve goes bankrupt (and they all do, eventually), all your stuff will stop working. That's reason enough not to spend money to support a product.

There would be hacks out within hours if your doomsday scenerio ever materialized. Also, theres plenty of tools to allow you to make backup copies of HL2 that's been purchased via steam and burn it to DVD. I'm sure the same will apply when DOD:S comes out also.

Re: Feh

So I shouldn't be able to play a game just because it's oudated? I really don't care how old a game is, I should still be able to play it.

It's exactly like games from the internet boom that all used different online mulitplayer networks that died in the boom. I have all these old games where MP doesn't work now.

I agree with the orginal poster. I want the actual game on a disc that I can use wherever whenever I want. I don't want to have to use an internet connection, I don't want to be unable to play because of some Steam screw up, and I don't want to be unable to play because Steam no longer exists.

Also to the people talking about hacks, they'll be out in minutes. It's a mod to a game that already has plenty of hacks for it.

Also to whoever said it was nice of Valve to have these servers and not make us pay monthly. These are not servers you can play on, these are to purchase the game through. Best Buy does not charge you monthly to keep their stores open, Valve shouldn't either. It's not being nice, it would be stupid to charge monthly.

You do realize that'd be the same with almost any company, right?

Look at Westwood Online, it's gone because they were bought over by EA. I've paid for my Tiberium Sun game, and I cannot play it online because there's no more master server to give me a list of available games.

Re: Feh

Actually, from past experience, (can't remember specific example), I recall a company that simply made one final change to their software before they shuttered their doors - they enabled the software to no longer require the main servers to function to avoid hosing all those loyal customers that had purchased the software.

Also, vALVE is far from being in financial trouble. They are alive and kicking in their Kirkland office and continue to develop quality products that generate revenue. After all, what other companies have you seen successfully throw off the shackles of an overbearing distribution agreement and still walk away profitable?

Yeah, keep those doomsday comments to yourself unless you have proof to show they are "going under". Troll.

speaking of that my bosses office is in that area, lol I got home I had no clue Vavle had it's HQ in that area.

Sorry but I found Valve (Half Life 2) distribution model cumbersome and lethargic.

The buyer is required to have a fast Broadband connection.
The buyer gets 6 CDs to install from (last I looked, the Gold package didn't include a DVD but was supposed to).
And after a lengthy installation, you must then download more updates. If the server(s) aren't overloaded as it was, its rather arrogance to curb piracy at the "legit" buyer's expense (and time).
Personally, M$ and Sony licensed game companies will take over the gaming market. Only High-end PCs and limited games will be available to PC users. The marketshare will be the console users and their online gaming. Its already beginning. I recommend a BUY of EA stock...

Because we all know how well steam stopped piracy.

They aren't overloaded - they're just slow. Anyways, to play online, don't you need to update your client ANYWAYS? Yeah, I thought so.

I feel like i'm in Fort Worth, cuz it looks like I just stepped into a steaming pile of bullsht.

What evidence do you have to back any of that up?

Re: Feh

Yuck. I hate Valve. Their crappy Steam crap wouldn't uninstall from my computer after I was done playing the Half-Life 2 demo. It took a few weeks of my computer being messed up until I got the reply I wanted from their Customer Support.

And the Half-Life 2 demo was boring. I don't understand why so many people love this game. Perfect Dark >>>>>>>>>>>>> Goldeneye 007 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Everything else.

1. maybe they spent more time on the actual game than the demo.
2. if you can't uninstall steam, maybe you shouldn't use a computer.
Add/Remove programs then delete the steam folder. It's not rocket science. Actually, it's not even ape science.

Good point. HL2 was completely thouroughly bugridden, MUCH unlike the competition like EA Games and the Sims, BF1942, BF:V, BF2, etc..
