CI Host, Do they really steal babies?

www.cihost.com

Ok I am doing some research on getting a couple of servers off site and CI Hosts prices are insane, $165/mo for 1/3 rack with 6mb connection. There has to be a catch?

So over on the EV1 site they are bashing CI and acting like they eat their young.

Is this just a battle of the hosts or does CI really suck?

Thanks for any help!

CIHost has a list/history of negative experiences. If you do a google search for CIHost reviews you shall find some interesting reviews, etc. With all hosts are there negatives along with the positives. But CIHost may not be a provider you want if what you need to accomplish is considered crucial.

Inexpensive prices may not result in the service level or experience you are seeking.

I had a client in 2003 that used their services, experience was "so-so".

Following is from BBB:

Customer Experience

According to information in Bureau files, this company has an unsatisfactory file condition due to unanswered and unresolved complaints. The company has also failed to eliminate the basic cause of complaints. Complaints processed by the Bureau in its three-year reporting period concern service issues, billing disputes and refund practices. Specifically, complainants state the company did not provide services. Other complainants state the company billed for services not provided and failed to make promised refunds in a timely manner.

This company has stated on their website they are members of the Better Business Bureau and participants in the BBB On-Line Reliability Program. This company is not a member of this Better Business Bureau and is not included in the Better Business Bureau's On-Line Reliability Program.

When assessing complaint information, please consider the company's size and volume of transactions. Please understand that the nature of complaints and a firm's responses to them is often more important than the number.

The following data concerns complaints processed by the BBB since the firm's file opened in August 1998 or over the last thirty six months, whichever is less.

The Bureau received 99 complaints against this company during it's three year reporting period.

These complaints concerned: Sales Issues (3) Customer Service Issues (71) Credit or Billing Issues (10) Refund or Exchange Issues (7) Product Quality Issues (2) Contract Issues (3) Guarantee or Warranty Issues (2) Repair or Service Issues (1)

They were closed as: Resolved (79) Unresolved (14) The company addressed the disputed issues and exhibited a good faith effort to resolve the complaint (1) No Response from the company (5)

Of the total complaints in 36 months, 41 closed in the last year.

Additional File Information

In June 2002, this company filed a suit against the BBB at Fort Worth alleging our public report contained false statements regarding C I Host. As with all BBB public reports, information is based in large part, on complaints received from customers of the company.
If you decide to use them, please be sure to write a review after a few months on how they are.

Hope that helps.

Heh. That's hilarious. You're going to one provider's site to get reviews for a competitor?

Get real.

Ok, so what non biased review site do you reccomend? EV1 just happened to come up on a google search. I sure as heck would not take your direct reccomendation since I know you are a reseller for connectivity services.

According to this they are ok... »www.hosting-review.com/hosting-r···st.shtml

According to this they suck... »www.webhostingjury.com/reviews/CI_Host

I don't want to use their servers, just their rack space and all the reviews I can find are for hosting.

I frequent DSLR and I could not find any reviews, so I asked.

I would think you could have added some insight, instead you just crap on my thread... again.

I think his point is that people at EV1 aren't going to have many nice things to say about a competitor. You are better off using the other sites (which you cited) and asking here.

If there are any other CI Host customers that visit this forum I'm sure you will hear from them. I would tend to trust the reviews here, since we don't pull any punches or delete bad reviews (like some other sites do).

If you do decide to go with CI Host, please let us know what your experience was like! If you would like recommendations on other hosts besides CI Host, just let us know your detailed requirements and we will try to help.

Thank you Greg...

I have 5 servers I am looking to get off site.

2 are 2U servers that run our CRM system and have special software that can't just be loaded to a hosted server.
1 is our Front End exchange server that is in a 1U.
1 is our SAN controller, it's in a 4U
1 is our Monowall 1U

10-14U would be great.

Our "Home Office" is connectivity challenged (With 100 employees), our branch offices have 10-15 employees however have 3 times the internet connectivity, and redundant connections. I need to get these out of our office and onto faster connections.

6MB Un metered would be a great setup, I don't want to pay by the Byte, the SAN has 1.8TB of space on it, it only replicates changes to files however it's where I keep my daily backups.

Chicago or KC would be nice, Omaha would be BEST.
CI Host Chicago is 26ms from me so that was a nice plus.

Any help with a known provider would be nice.

We've had a couple of servers colo'd with CI for about 3 months months now in their DFW facility.

Overall, our experience has been positive so far. There's been two problems, one outage (switch problems) and another was poor network response (DDoS). Both times I noticed the issues almost immediately. When I called in the techs were already working on the problem and had things back to normal in short order (within 10 minutes the first time and about 5 mins the second time).

When you call in for colo support, you talk to someone at the NOC who can diagnose the problem and either work on it or get the necessary people involved immediately.

Their "monster ticket" system leaves something to be desired, however. I recommend using the phone to actually talk to someone if you do have problems.

Judging by the price you mentioned, I'm assuming you're looking at their "Crazy Deals"... Two things to keep in mind:

1) You get exactly what's posted with each offer. Additional network or power drops beyond what's offered will run in the neighborhood of $75e. per month. Since there's only 1 ethernet drop, you'll have to provide the router/switch/firewall to feed each box in the rack and account for the additional power plug(s) required for your connectivity device(s).

2) Crazy deals are a 1 year pre-paid commitment.

Depending on our evaluation at the end of the 1yr term, I may consider putting some servers in their NYC or CHI facilities.

I know this is late...but what you are looking to do with a colo is nuts. Why not host these services at one your branch locations since they have better connectivity...or upgrade your own bandwidth.

Looking to go with a "dollar deal" hosting service to support business critical services is completely illogical.

It's not really nuts, it's getting it out of my building.

I can handle the load out of here most of the time however increasing my bandwidth means going from $1200mo to $4000mo unless I start bonding T1's into BGP4 and then I am still stuck with 1 carrier. Your still stuck with 2 1.5 pipes if you make the routes diverse.

My remote offices for a better term have better cable modems, not really better facilities.

So I can fail over to here if I needed to easily, just would be better if it's somewhere else most of the time.

Ah, ok. That makes more sense. Well, make sure you pick a good host, not just a cheap one.

Hope it works out!

I don't know about CI Host's other locations, but in LA, they've started to host their boxes in other companies datacenters. Maybe they've over expanded?

Last month I went to a datacenter in LA to work on a box and saw three different servers labeled "CI Host" inside the rack our server was in. This was not a CI Host datacenter.

Maybe the box was just mislabeled

$1,200/mo for a T1? A full T1 is only $400/mo here.

The regional cable service has business plans with unrestricted/1500 for $195/mo or 8000/256 for $55/mo.

$400 for a T1 probably includes a minimum the distance charge. You would only get that price if you were right next to CO/POP.

The T1 circuit is $150/mo, and the ISP providers charge $200-250/mo on top of the circuit.

Wow, that's really cheap. You must be close to a CO.
