This SCAM is also hitting Government Agencies, at least at the State level. Since we are guardians of the peoples money, we are mandated to use State designated websites or websites that must meet some darn stringent parameters...with the only deviation I have seen in my 22 years as a public servant being an emergency purchase. Purchasing from Ebay is prohibited, as well as using Pay Pal or other escrow companies. So I'm inclined to support the Database Has Been Hacked theory. By whom, remains to be seen, with some odds on favorites being: (1) The inside man (2) A disgruntled employee (3) A government monitoring agency (4) A terrorist cell (5) A diversion for some other heinous crime (6) Maybe even a genetically abhorrent person who lacks the gene combination for sensing right from wrong or for feeling remorse for transgressions & violations against those of us who have been sullied by this most foul perpetrator(s)... |

1 edit | reply to Doctor Olds It isn't amazon, or any other e-commerce company, that is being used as a source for these scams.
There is a leak inside the credit card system somewhere, something that allows card numbers to be tested fast enough and without detection. Credit card numbers are simply not long enough and as you know, the "security" code on the back, and the persons full billing address, is not always required by every vendor putting through a charge, thus, these details are not required. Full Stop. I'm not even sure the name is required.
So all you need (as a bad-guy vendor with e-access to bank billing) is valid numbers and expiry dates. If you really need something else like a zip code, perhaps the DECLINED transaction returns "DECLINED - ZIP INVALID" so then you have a good number, and the problem is reduced to just having to guess the ZIP.
I'd bet there are weaknesses within the huge card processing industry that allow a bank of valid numbers and expiry dates to be built up, without detection, and then the fraudsters electronically charge 1000s of people at once, transfer the money away, and leave their fake-vendor vehicle empty for the slow bank fraud departments to find and close. Then they move on and do it all again.
So there is no point comparing where you used the card. It isn't the problem. |

| The "leak" is well-known. (Not so much so that I will post all the details here!) Basically, you need access to a merchant account, then you run a small charge, say $1.00, on all the cards. When the merchant finds his account shut the next day, who cares? |

Then they move on and do it all again. This is exactly the problem. What gets me is the non-chalant attitude some of the banks have about the whole situation. Meanwhile while we're here trying to get to the bottom of the scam the banks don't have any problems with charging interest on these bogus charges while the charge is investigated.

Thanks for the information in Digital Age Cypress SE. I called my bank and they said I could only dispute after it had posted. I googled the name and found this site. I have since called back and reported it as fraud and closed the account. Thanks! |

I had an attempted debit on my pay pal acct yesterday. fortunately it was denied but I have money today and this scares me. where are they getting these card numbers. U use mine mostly at grocery stores and only on christian web sites. I have used ebay and half.com...and wonder it this could be the culprit?
I usually do those with pay pal directly, not giving the card number.
Im on hold waiting for the pay pal people to pick up the phone...so I can report this and cancel the card.
what else should I do. Im glad to find this site on google...I didn't have a clue what was going on.

On the 22nd I also had a $24.99 charge to my debit card from a Digital Age Cypress 888 Cypress. I also had a $9.95 charge from "GLOBALNET SOFTWARE 201-636-4208 IL" on October 1, 2005. I called the number today only to find it disconnected. A call to my credit card company resulted in a reversal of the charge. |

Yep, just got hit with a $24.99 charge from Digital Age, Cypruss as of yesterday 10/6/05. My bank is happily taking care of this for me, but moving to a new card etc... is the real pain.
Also filed report at www.ifccfbi.gov (sometime you just gotta involve the feds...) ;-(
And on we go... |

@aol.com | I do not have these charges. I have a Wells Fargo Visa Debit Card. I shop online at 3 million different stores and very frequently, this is not a certain store internet hack. |

Those scum bags at "Digital Age" got me too for 24.99 on 10/7/05. Calling my bank on Monday. Does anyone have any information on the company Digital Age or any identifying information that could be reported to the FBI? This sounds like an offshore operation... correct? |

I was hit with a charge from Digital Age yesterday 10/7/2005 for the amount of $24.99. I spoke with my bank and as soon as it posts I have to dispute it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to all this computer stuff and have no idea what is going on. |
