Wrong Credit History Info

OK I just hope this is not the wrong place to do this.

I have a twin brother and we live together (roommates). We have similar names (I guess) and apparently credit reporting companies got it all wrong.

On my file his employer is listed as mine, on some reports I am listed as his spouse and vice versa. He recently purchased some furniture and that account is listed in my profile . For years he was not able to get any credit history for some reason and in fact the only reason he purchased that furniture was to build some credit history.

My credit score is 728 and I have no negative reports on my file whatsoever but I'd like to clear this situation up.

He does not exist according to them

I don't have any experience with dealing with 3 major credit reporting companies.

What can I do?
Will this affect my credit score?

Thanks.

The only way he is showing up on anything is if he is using your social security number .
So might want to look in to that.

Yes but he is not using it. That's the part I don't understand. We have different SS #s but for some reason his SS # is never found in their database!

We're 24 years old and he can't get any loans at all because they have absolutely no info about him.

I'm worried because even though my score is decent I was able to get a car loan with 8.54% interest rate.

BTW until recently we had cell service with US Cellular and that was suspended because of fraud. It turned out they thought someone had a fraudulent account even though we both pay on time. My brother cleared that mess and got his service back but I switched because I don't want to get that problem again.

I'm sick of it to be honest, our bank keeps messing our deposits. His money gets deposited to my account and vice versa. And even though we are extremely careful when giving out our info and making sure the clerks get it right, probably 5 out of 10 times someone makes a mistake.

Try this guy: »/profile/444113
He's a collection agent, and seemed like a reasonable and knowlegeable person the other day when I offended him. (something I should have kept my mouth shut about)

Anyway, he seemed to know his stuff, and commented that he liked to help with this stuff.

Good luck,
Credit problems can get to be a real PITA, if they're not taken care of correctly.

Try this site. www.clarkhoward.com.
Clark Howard is a consumer guru here in the Alanta area. He has a radio show broadcast nationally. I don't know if you get it in your area, but check. If not go the site. I'm sure there's something there regarding your problem, as it is a common problem with people with the same names. He's amazing in the problems he or his staff can solve for you. There's phone numbers listed to contact them.

Best of all his advice is free! If he can't solve it for you, nobody can.

Call the big three and they will investigate,I had all sorts of items not belonging to me including a GMAC auto loan of $30,000(I am a Ford guy ) and a Visa card from Wells Fargo(never done biz with them) and a address 400 miles away where i never lived.

They investigated and cleared it up with in 30 days with no hassle

Experian

Equifax

Trans Union

I also encourage everyone to utilize this free credit report siteAnnualcreditreport.com no selling or obligation,in fact they are obligated by Federal law to provide this to you the consumer, this is how I found all the mistakes on mine,if not for the reports It might have snowballed worse than it was

TY Joes I appreciate the word of mouth.

First thing first Anon. Exactly how similar are your names ie First 2nd and Last names.
90% of all errors on your credit usually come from mis-typing or human error.

Do or have you and your brother delved into a financial venture together? Car Apartment, even cell phone?

This should be a resonable fix I would suggest you contact the above mentioned credit agencies, more then likely they will want you to submitt the change via writting or even have it notarized, this should be a very simple process and you should really have no problem doing it.

Now to answer your question, about it hurting ur score.
you have almost nothing to worry about it affecting your score unless your brother is using your Social Security Number when it all boils down thats what really counts. Potential creditors dont look for you by name they do so by SSN, and the fact that his name is similar would look to them as a typo, none the less dont neglect updating your credit, I typed this and am too lazy to chage my question about financial venture this my friend is where it probably originated.

Lil tid bit most people dont know and this will explain why one bureau will have a different employer then another i.e. TransUnion will have a diff poe (place of employment) then say Equifax Some companies only order from one bureau, and not all three, some will only update one bureau and not all. Major purchases like house or car tend to lead to the tri-bureau report this is the most accurate, and defines the potential borrower a lil better.

Hope I have helped in anyway I could if you need more clarification feel free to ask, even though people may think we (Bill Collectors) are bad people some of us do honestly like to help.

You both need to pull your credit reports. Once you get them, go through them and make a list of what is yours and what is his. Submit this information with a written explanation and proof of ID (both of you).

Before sending the *corrections* back to the credit bureaus call them and *briefly* explain the situation. Get the name of a contact you can submit the paperwork to and keep their name for future follow ups.

It may take a few months to clear up but it will be done if you're organized and follow up.

I see many credit reports at work. Their accuracy is often far from 100%. Misspelled names and addresses are very common. Whatever typos and misinformation comes in from reporting sources is added to a credit report.

After we refinanced our mortgage, our one mortgage was listed on a credit report twice, making it appear as if we were paying on two separate mortgages, resulting in a the denial of a student loan. It was fixable.

Call/write the SS Administration FIRST and make sure they are using the correct name on your accounts and they have your FULL legal names(no NICKS or abbreviations - if your Birth Certificate has William make sure they are not using Billy), then contact the three Credit Reporting Agencies and get reports and dispute ANY irregularities >> all this most likely didn't create itself >> somewhere along the line one name was used with the others SS number(intentionally or accidentally)- maybe your Brother didn't have/know his so he used yours?.

I think you also need to have a sit down with your brother.

To clear any discrepancies you need proof of person.

Let's say your credit report shows you having an account at JCPennys, when your friend opened it up.
The database may have glued it to your name by address instead of social.

So, to prove you have no such thing, you need to get some written statement from a company stating you are not their customer..or that you ARE!

Like proving exact address: use utility bills in your name.
Proving loans opened: get letters from managers or credit departments.
Proving loans closed: get closing statements.

Take a look at both your last names, your ssn digits AND your CC #s- how far apart are they?

Be careful, be thourough and be diligent...it takes a long time to clear things like this up, but they're worth fixing.
