Re: [PAP2] Unlocking Guide

I reckon lots of PAP2 units will be unlocked and Vonage will have less customers after this ...

Re: [PAP2] Unlocking Guide -

Mazilo,

My PAP2-NA was supplied to me unlocked by my VoSP. It had firmware version 2.0.13. I just upgraded to version 3.1.10(LS)

I wonder if I should:
- NEVER factory resetting
- Turn provisioning OFF
- any other precautions

I'm not sure if these rules apply only to hacked boxes or all PAP2's (even if they were suplied unlocked) ?

Pleased to hear

An ordinary PAP2-NA should be factory unlocked. Honestly, I don't really know if your VoSP has reprogrammed the PAP2-NA to its default configuration. If so, then after you factory reset this PAP2-NA, it will bring back its default configurations, a.k.a. Vonage locked PAP2, and if your VoSP has its default configuration opened then you can access its admin page without a password or the password given by your VoSP. Turning off the Provision feature is not a matter of yes or no. I believe you will first need to consult this with your VoSP to see if it will violate the TOS if you turn of the Provision features.

Re: [PAP2] Unlocking Guide -

Mazilo

Thanks for your reply.

To clarify the issue: The PAP2-NA was sold to me at full price and was supplied unlocked. The VoSP (not Vonage) actually made me factory reset it during troubleshooting. I've factory reset it myself numerous times and have never had a problem accessing the admin or user logins. No conflict with the TOS.

The box was supplied with firmware version 2.0.13. I just upgraded to ver 3.1.10(LS) because I was having trouble with the older firmware.

My question is: Will the new firmware installed on the always unlocked box cause it to lock up if I factory reset it?

I ask this because most firmware upgrades refer to Vonage cracked boxes and specifically state not to do a factory reset on them. What happens to an always unlocked box if the firmware is upgraded and is then factory reset ?

Thanks again for the clarification.

This is right because the Linksys/Vonage locked PAP2 is factory configured to Vonage and Vonage doesn't give out the admin password. Therefore, every time the PAP2 is factory reset, it will bring back the factory default configurations which is locked with a different admin password. I don't have a PAP2-NA; however, IIRC the factory default configurations on a PAP2-NA has an empty admin password. As such, it's not locked. Linksys (or Vonage) only releases a single firmware for all PAP2 versions, i.e. PAP2, PAP2-NA, PAP2-UK, etc. Your question has been asked so many times in this thread with the answers. Since I don't have a PAP2-NA, I can't just tell you to go ahead to factory reset your PAP2-NA; however, you can judge it yourself from the above explanation logically. Worse comes to worst, have your VoSP replaced the PAP2-NA with another one.

Re: [PAP2] Unlocking Guide -

Mazilo,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Found your posting which says

"A pap2-na (NA=North America) is not supposed to be locked/tied to any VoSP like a PAP2 is. That said, any PAP2 firmware released under Linksys is not supposed to lock a pap2-na unless the pap2-na is used to serve some VoSPs that remotely locked the unit (which can usually be unlocked by a factory reset). "

My unit is one of these units that was factory resettable and had no lock for admin / user logins. My question is now answered.

The reason I sometimes do a factory reset is to restore the unit to factory settings in case I change too many settings and do not what the default values are.

If you still have service with them, it is best just not to mess with it. Also, if it was supplied unlocked it would also be best to work with them via support if you want to use the second line for other voip testing. Normally if it is unlocked from the provider, doing a factory reset will erase all their settings and you will have to start over with their help. Doing a factory reset is rarely needed because a reboot will fix most of the issues.

I've tried dialing **** to get to the IVR but the PAP2-NA seems to reboot itself when I do that. Anyone else notice this happening to their PAP2 / PAP2-NA?

Not me. I have that on one of mine... You can get an official release from linksys that is 3.1.12, but I haven't tried this one myself.

I loaded a Sipura 2.0.9 firmware on a pap2 3.1.9 LSc (von) but my web interface is not enabled. I tried the IVR 7932 option but I do not know the password. Please any suggestions .

If you can try to first factory reset your PAP2 on an isolated LAN, this will definitely re-enable the web interface. Or, you can feed your PAP2 with a simplified and plain-text XML file that will enable web interface. The later approach has been discussed here numerously. Please take your time to read posts in this thread. You are not only going to find out your answer, but you will also learn a lot of the DOs and DON'Ts regarding your unlocked PAP2 unit!

FWIW, found out that changing the codecs and saving settings seems to restore the IVR.(maybe just making any change and saving the new settings will work too).

- If I then power down the unit and restart it I lose the IVR again.
- If I dial **** from line 2 (which is the line I did not make codec changes) the unit reboots.

Not sure what is happening here
