 [Speed Problem] Connection incredibly slow at night

I live in San Francisco and have the regular SBC DSL package and about once or twice a week my speeds drop to less than 1k/sec from around 6pm-11pm. I can verify this by though NetLimiter in XP, which tells transfer speeds. My pings to the four local DNS servers (206.13.28.12 - 206.13.31.12) all come back at 3 seconds or higher. I called tech support once already and they took me through a pointless process of clearing cookies. Is there anything I can do about this? It's slower than even a 56k modem and makes it almost impossible to browse the web.

On a side note, I talked to tech support and they had me move PPPoE to the router from the modem and now I can't access my modem from 192.168.0.1. It's a SpeedStream, is there a way to fix this?

Wow! I can't believe they even suggested that you move it, normally they don't want to have anything to do with a router! Anyway, just plug directly into the modem when you need to look at line stats. And given your issues, that would be something you'd want to do the next time one of these big lag sessions happens.

In fact, save a copy of the Statistics info when it's running fine, then one when it's not. We can look at that info and give you more concrete advice. My guess is that you're going to need to post in SBCDirect, a private forum here on BBR that is run by official SBC/ASI technicians. But lets look at your stats first.

I had to use the reset button on the modem to get 192.168.0.1 to come up - even when plugged directly into the modem it wouldn't show. Anyway, here are the statistics from when it's "good," and I use the term liberally. Let me know if I need any others.

Those numbers by themselves don't show a problem, but continue to watch it and monitor its progress at it gets closer to a time when it's bad.

OK it's really slow now, usually it doesn't do this two nights in a row so this must be a special occasion.

Well, your SN Margin isn't dropping off so that's good. You probably had to reset the modem again, huh. Can't tell if you're getting loads of CRC errors since that counter resets when you reset the modem. You do have a seriously long loop (or some other disturber like bridge taps), though.

At this point I think we need to turn you over to the pros in SBCDirect.

Note that SBCDirect is a private forum so only you and the SBC techs can see your thread. Also, the techs are usually pretty swamped with requests so be patient, they'll get to you as soon as they can.

Finally, don't reply to your SBCDirect post until one of the techs has replied first. They look for unanswered threads so if they see any replies they may bypass yours, thinking someone else is helping you.

Actually I didn't reset the modem - I only did it that one time so I could access its settings.

When I got the DSL installed they said I had line noise and had to come install some box on the line the DSL is plugged into.

I'll post in the other forum, thanks for the help.
