NIS 2006

Anyone try it? Is it worth the shot?

I would say yes, the ability to create "Secondary Rules" is great and the new Firewall learning mode is a nice but "dangerous" addition.

The new "Norton Security Center" basically duplicates the functionality of the Windows Security Center with some extensions specific to Symantec products. The recommendations of the new "Security Inspector" may be of help to harden a system, some them are somewhat strange (not sure if I would remove the Administrative share of the C: drive or the share of the webroot directory if IIS is installed and running, same applies to the recommendation to remove the share of the spool directory on a networked system with file and printer sharing enabled) but for most standalone home systems those may be appropriate.

I don't share Symantecs opinion that resource usage and the performance at boot time were improved (may depend on the definition of "boot", the system indeed boots faster but now it's under really heavy load after logon). As far as NAV is concerned, it contains the features found in NIS 2005 AntiSpyware addition and it looks like Alternate Data Streams are scanned. Daily updates of the NAV definitions may be an argument for some. There may be other changes "under the hood" but nothing obvious.

Hi,

We're testing two copies, one running on a wireless laptop and the other on a desktop configuration. Haven't had too much time yet to test-just installed this week, will try and write more over the weekend.
