Antivirus/Spyware Suite

Hello all. I am a college student who just bought a new pc. The thing is, it DID NOT come with any antivirus, or any security software. I am always on and fear that without protection I am vulnerable. I am looking for a GOOD,HIGH QUALITY software (or multiple programs) for all the protection I will need. I am new to this, so please inform me of what all is needed. I am looking for free or low cost, that can be purchased via credit card and a download, as I dont want to get it from in store, via the net please. So please enlighten me as to what as needed where to get it etc. THanks

Good pay AV = KAV
Good free AV = Avast
Good pay firewall = Outpost
Good free firewall = ZA free
Good free anti-spyware = MSAS, Ad-aware, Spybot
Good free IDS = AntiHook, WinPatol, Prevx home
Good luck.

My suggestion:

Good Antivirus:
Pay: Kaspersky Anti-Virus
Free: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Good firewall:
Free: ZoneAlarm
Pay: Sygate Personal Firewall PRO

Good anti-spyware:
Free: Microsoft Anti-Spyware
Pay: Spyware Doctor

i use norton internet security, although it is pricy, at 70dollars for 1year subscription.....it includes, ad blocking, anti-spyware, antivirus, firewall, spam filtering, etc

that is the link to the program if you wanted to look at it
i still have 2005 version, haven't upgraded yet, that version was released just about 5 days ago

First of all, kudos to you for wanting to be protected. My recommendations would echo all of the ones already given. Whichever of those you choose, make sure Spyware Blaster is in the mix. You can get it here:

It is free unless you want to donate. I would not recommend going on the internet without it.

Most of the commercial AVs are decent, but I would personally recommend KAV, F-Secure, or NOD32, if you're willing to part with your cash. The free solutions may also suffice, but none of them are on the same level as KAV, for example. On top of anti-malware programs, however, please consider setting up a limited user account and using that for your daily computer use such as browsing the net and reading emails. You might want to try this site for more information: »nonadmin.editme.com/

And lead me not into temptation - for I can find my way there myself easily enough.

How is that Avast? I am not really into paying 60-70 for a program, college is already breaking me heh. Any recommendations on free AV? Thanks again to everyone for the prompt replies and all the help.

So it would be safe to say AVG will be around for awhile? Thats my only worry about free antivirus.

So all in all would you give AVG a thumbs up or down, recommend it? Also is a firewall something I should download as well or just use the windows firewall?

i give avg a thumbs up, especially for free...and for a firewall, i suggest zonealarm
»www.zonelabs.com

and ofcourse just keep safe surving habits, update your AVG, and have zonealarm, and you should be well protected

Norton to me is nothing but a overpriced resource hog..

This is what I suggest

1) windows firewall
2) NAT router
3) AVG 7.0 pro

Your system should do well with that. Pending you have XP2.

Now I am reading up on AVG free edition. It says you get a 2 year license is that it? Or is it forever free does the license just renew at the end of 2 years etc. Thanks again to everyone
