I want to have a virtual credit card

Hi all,

Is it possible to have a virtual credit card with very low credit line? (around $200-$300)?
All my current credit cards are having $10K credit line, and I don't want to use them with online shopping.
Thanks for your info.

call and ask your company to lower your limit?

Call your CC company or check their website. I know MBNA lets you set up "virtual" accounts on their website with their own account numbers, expiration dates, and limits that simply charge to your regular card. After you use the virtual card, you delete it or let it expire, and it can't be used if stolen. MBNA calls this ShopSafe, and you can sign up for it/set it up on their website. When you order something online, you sign on to Shopsafe, specify a limit, and it gives you a temporary account number that you would use to place the order. That account number can only be used at one merchant; to use it on another site, you'd have to generate another account number.

The other option is to apply for another card and ask for a low limit like $500.

Citibank also.

Why not get a debit card? The credit amount can be set to anything you like.

MBNA's is superior, IMO, to Citibanks because Citibanks version doesn't let you assign a time for the number to expire.

Just open up a new CC or bank account not associated with any other accounts, open up paypal and thats it. You can limit your CC to what you want, and you deposit money into your bank acccount and then upload it into your virual Paypal account, ready to pay for anything.

Not quite true. I use Citi virtual numbers all the time. You can set money & time limits. The default time is about one month, but you can choose to set the expiration to any month/year you wish.

EDIT: I stand corrected -- you can only go up to 12 months out.

Discover has one time/one use CC #'s. It installs a toolbar on IE, and can also be run from an executable; it will fill in all the blanks on an order form, and generate a random CC # for you. Unfortunately, it's not available for anything else yet, but it does provide security when purchasing online.

Hmmm, maybe I was thinking of something else limiting on Citibanks services then. I just switched from MBNA to Citi and was a bit underwhelmed by Citi's site compared to MBNA's.
The ability to set an expiration isn't a new thing?

Another thing I didn't like was not being able to specify when my online payment should be taken from the bank - previously it was the day after I completed the process. I think now, however, you can tell it when you want the transaction to occur...

Ah, this pic was from the installed app. I think the web page version is in fact 'crippled' or at least there weren't as many options on the web as in the app the last time I looked.

I'm not sure about controlling the transaction date/time. I've never tried to do that.

I will be the first to admit Citi could do a better job on a few things with their virtual numbers, but if you break down and install the app it is not that bad.

On the Citibank website, I believe I can login and generate the number with an expire date/time. Though not 100% on that..

Discover has one time/one use CC #'s.
Gary
WARNING about Discovercard's Virtual Card System: Unlike MBNA's Shopsafe (the best VC system out there imho), Discovercard's system is not a One-Time Use system, but rather, a One-Merchant system. In other words, it all but renders the whole point of controlling access to your creditline moot, since repeat-charges can be made to the same VC number as long as it's the same merchant. If you were, for example, thinking about setting up a VC to demo AOL with the express purpose of denying access beyond the first charge made, you'd be SOL with Discovercard. Your only remedy is to actually call CS and then you're likely to get a nasty attitude because you're taking their time.

It astonished me the first time I realized this and I had perhaps the rudest CC rep I've ever dealt with argue that "the terms are clearly stated when you sign up for this" (not) if "you had just taken the time to read them."

I demanded that she point to the page where this loophole, big enough to drive a hummer through, existed and (surprise surprise) "I can't take the time to do that right now but I know it's there if you look for it."

Pathetic. Use Shopsafe.

Wow, thanks. I was under the assumption that it was a 1 time #, not 1 merchant. I went looking through DiscoverCard.com for the information, and it does say it can be used at 1 merchant for repetitive purchases, such as monthly internet access charges, etc.

Also from their FAQs:

Q: Will Single-Use Card Numbers work with recurring purchases and split shipments?
A: Yes. Single-Use Card Numbers works for one or multiple purchases at a single online retailer. For example, Barnes & Noble.com can retain a Single-Use Card Numbers in your profile for future purchases. You can also use a Single-Use Card Number for recurring charges at an online retailer, such as your monthly Internet Service Provider fee.

I was surprised to learn it wasn't what I thought!

That's freakin' ridiculous. How perverse a definition of "Single-Use" can one create?

Glad I canceled Discover years ago...

Actually, MBNA's Shopsafe is a per-merchant setup too. But with the limit and expiration date, it's easy enough to limit what they can charge to the #.

I love it! People read the FAQ instead of the actual contract terms.
