There's several free servers with binaries available, however you're going to have to do research. As it's not in the best interest of those who use those services, such as myself to post their addresses.
So true plus you have to be researching constantly, just about, because there no guarantee the ones that you find free now will work forever. Usually they don't. A lot of the time it may be like free test accounts other newsgroups providers are just testing for a few days but won't last forever. Sometimes very few people know about them. Though most that are free seem to have limited groups, speed, or retention.

Though the key is to use more than one together that way you get the strength of each one with all of them together!

It will will never be as good as a paid newsgroup provider though.

At least not in my opinion.

I say try out a paid newsgroup service. A lot of them have free trials. May only be 1 gig or 500 MB but still.

I believe easynews and giganews offer 1 gig for a free trial and newshosting only 500MB.

If you don't download a lot then get a block account that way you only pay for it once. You can keep it forever even if you don't ever use all the gigs you bought. Another good way to try out newsgroups.

The biggest disadvantage in my opinion with block accounts though is sometimes if your connection messes up, the post isn't exactly what you wanted, etc you wasted all the gigs sorta. Though thats the way it goes.

Thats why if you have unlimited you really don't have to worry if that happens. If does oh well. Just wasted some time no gigs were wasted! Though it usually doesn't happen.

Your paying ISP has a 24-hour retention period, yet you want somebody who you do not pay to have what a month's worth of binaries?

There use to be a newsgroup called (I think) alt.freenewserver or something like that. It was great for sniffing out freebees and test servers.

Your paying ISP has a 24-hour retention period, yet you want somebody who you do not pay to have what a month's worth of binaries? You want want crappy newsservers, go to SBC where the messages never even show up. Seriously, the answer is simple. If you want it free, download once-a-day. Honestly, if there were a free binary server available, nobody would be stupid enough to post the address here. The server would be flooded from all the extra traffic which means no bunnies them.

As mentioned Yottanews

Bubbanews will give you 50megs/day but you need a CC number.
Terranews does the same but requires a CC number and a one time $3.50 charge.

Yottanews has 1gb for free. I am personally not fond of the company though.

I want to start using newsgroups, cause I hear it's the safest way to download stuff.

Problem is my ISP (RR) has terrible retention. 24hours for binaries, 7 days for text.

Are there any free newsgroups servers out there?
