All four are scripted. But you are right, the Google toolbar's pop-up blocker had nothing to do with it. Disabling Javascript killed them.

Google Toolbar has nothing to do with it in this case as 3 of the 4 are Javascripted tricks.

Some of those are not pop-ups in the sense of opening a separate window so standard pop-up blockers will not be effective against them. For example none of these are pop-ups.

FWIW, none of those worked on my browser. I have SP2's popupblocker disabled and use the one on the Google toolbar instead. I also use IE in High Security mode, which blocks any javascript and ActiveX from running unless I specifically allow it.

I do have Java off, but my Javascript is on and the first one did not open it's popup.

The second test did open the dropdown pop up/slider.

The third test also did it's banner grab.

The last one also did its thing staying at the top right as you scrolled the page.

So, what does that all mean? The first link uses Java and the last three use Javascript. They made typos on the last three pages you chose as when I disabled Javascript none of those popup appeared when retested. Those are easy to filter out when using a program like Proxomitron.

The information offered is also incorrect. Disabling Java will not prevent any of these techniques. Disabling Javascript will however. For those I listed above there is simply no limit to the number of ways such structures can be coded and so one should not expect any pop-up blocker to be 100% effective against them.
