I set all of the programs to uber-trusted, opened the ports, basically gave them full access... the lag spikes never went away though.
IMO if there were a configuration problem it should either be completely block or completely allow. This ping spiking sounds more like an issue that needs to be fixed with the program itself.

If you are getting lag spikes with Zone Alarm you might want to make sure that all the necessary programs for that game have their security levels properly set in Zone Alarm so that they have access through your security layers. ZoneAlarm Pro may update these settings automatically by using SmartDefense Adviser. As more people use the program for games those files that your game uses will eventually become part of that updated list. For now you will have to manually configure many of your on-line games so that they have access through the ZA firewall and to your system files. Since Zone Alarm automatically sets Zone Alarm to put your routers entire local network to the internet zone try instead also ADDING your machine's own IP address in the Trusted Zone (for example add and apply 192.168.1.100 or whatever your IP address is to the ZA firewall's trusted zone). |

NAV 2006 or 2005 may very well be incompatible with ZoneAlarm Security Suite since you are using two AV programs. But ZoneAlarm Pro which does not have antivirus should match up well with the new NAV. However, you might want to turn off the newer firewall like feature that is included in the latest NAV programs as well as making sure that XPs SP2 firewall is not enabled along with ZAP. You should only be running one software firewall such as ZAP and one Antivirus program. Norton Internet Security also has a firewall so that would also not match with any version of Zone Alarm. It is best to purchase only the individual antivirus programs if you want to use ZoneAlarm. The only exception to using a suite would be if you used only the ZoneAlarm Security program which has antivirus. You can however run multiple antispyware programs at the same time one the same machine as I have by using ZAPs Antispyware enabled, Spy Sweeper 4, MS Antispyware, McAfee Antispyware, Spybot S&D, and Spyware Blaster. |

I wish this version didn't cause huge lag spikes that make the games GunZ Online and World of Warcraft unplayable.
Other than that it's nice. I have this on my laptop right now, since that's a non-gaming machine. This PC I'm on uses Windows Firewall until this issue is solved

I have been using ZAP since version 2.6 . I had problems with some early versions of 4, 5, and 6 . ZAP 6.0.631 had a few issues, mostly too many pop up warnings and some other minor annoyances. I did a clean install of ZAP 6.0.667.00 and I was amazed at how good it is. They fixed most of the pop up issues, the stability is the best ever, and my DSL connection seems faster than I can remember. I really like the three layer security that protects the Windows OS and critical internet files. I can not believe people are bitching and complaining about the new ZAP and calling it bloatware. This version is lean and clean even with the new antispyware feature turned on. I was so impressed with it that I installed it on three other machines and purchased two year subscription renewals for all of them. I have had zero problems on all four of those Windows XP Pro systems using ZAP. Since I hate updating software subscriptions and the price is cheaper doing a two year instead that I recommend doing a CLEAN installation with the latest ZAP and go for a two year renewal. I chose ZAP instead of the ZA Security Suite since I preferred using a different Antivirus software (Norton 2003). But if you want to keep your machine lean and simple and have an all in one package then a two year subscription with the ZA Security Suite might be the easiest and least expensive way to go. If you do decide on using a different AV with ZAP I have found that McAfee VirusScan 9 or 10 and the Norton's from 2003 and on match up very well with ZAP as well as the antispyware programs such as Webroot Spy Sweeper and Microsoft Antispyware. |

When I said ".. a few problems in the past" I meant, specifically, enabling those privacy settings caused escalating memory usage with the vsmon.exe process, javascript functionality problems, and sometimes odd page-rendering on web-sites. I no longer use any ZA Pro privacy features because I found better ways.
Possibly v6.0 corrected the situations I experienced with older versions. But many people seem to only look at their browser settings and don't consider that ZA may prevent javascript and cookies working properly if privacy controls are enabled. Just my opinion, there seems to be far fewer problems if ZA privacy settings are turned off. I have had no difficulties using ZAP without them (in fact, I'm a satisfied customer  ). |

Doomed for disaster? I wouldn't go that far. But as I've clearly point out in the past. No reasonable member here would tell someone not to install a Microsoft update that would in fact fix a security problem. Although some system admins would state that they would wait awhile to make sure nothing got broke do to this patch or fix being applied.
Many here have stated that my opinion is a bit over the top in regards to not using older builds. Yet they refuse to acknowledge the many times I have been vindicated in regards to my opinion.
Just recently a flaw was pointed out in relation to older builds of the ZoneAlarm product. Granted it seems like this hasn't been fixed in the free version.

In regards to the install procedure. I'd say that sticking with the /CLEAN method would be the best approach. You should never have an occasion where your going to have to do a full reinstall of an OS do to a ZoneAlarm problem.
As to the comment in regards to bloat. I think a look at the features list and the related alert I linked above. Is a perfect example of the fact that other features have been added to improve the overall security of the user. And some of what others claim is bloat is actually very helpful in regards to user security. Recent additions to the product are what make the newer builds immune to the reported vulnerability.
Also how can this be bloat? When it has been shown that resource usage has stayed the same or only slightly increased with these additions?

This is not to say that ZoneLabs hasn't had some issues in regards to this product. I've personally addressed some of these. Most recently I've been very vocal in regards to the lack of communication with TeamZ or at least with me. Maybe this is do to my most recent comments.
I've personally not experienced any problems with the latest build. Although I've yet to reinstall Style XP on any of our machines at home. Though I've not seen any reports of users having the modified boot screen issue again with the newer builds.

You can change the intial auto settings to any way you like. At that point, the config for that program is changed from auto to custom and the SDA will not change it.
In your shoes I would be a little concerned that you may have some other conflict since your intial 6.x install went badly. Make sure you image/backup your drive prior to trying another install. |

With ZAP I prefer to avoid all privacy controls and let Windows Security Center watch my anti-virus. ZAP's cookie-blocking, javascript control, and ad-blocking has caused me a few problems in the past -- there are better programs to handle that stuff. Everything else seems fine with default settings.
ZAP is good at configuring program access on its own with "SmartDefense Adviser" set Auto. I don't see a lot of prompts anymore. |

Clean install is now the method suggested by ZoneLabs. As for polemic features, I don't think there are any with the free version (i.e. no privacy controls, advanced program control, anti-spyware, etc..). The OS Firewall can also be disabled if there is some reason you want to... |
