[TWC] Level3 breaks public peering

FYI everyone ... Level3.NET has decided to turn off public peering with Cogent (and others) this morning at 6am.

What does this mean?

Anyone with connections through Level3.NET (like RoadRunner) cannot access certain Internet sites because Level3.NET refuses to route to them.

This is just greed! Level3 basically wants everyone who peers with them to pay, and not provide any free public peering.

Everyone should call Level3.NET at 877-453-8353 and complain.

I am a RoadRunner customer and can no longer access my office because my office is connected via Cogent.

Level3 needs to hear from the Internet community that what they are doing is wrong.

Re: [TWC] Level3 breaks public peering

RR will simply update their routing tables to word "around" the problem and they'll probably do this quickly.

Re: [TWC] Level3 breaks public peering

The network status page at least has something that vaguely touches on the issue:

I've never seen them put "RoadRunner" or "All divisions" as the area affected before.

further...

my own domain, which has not been reachable by me from roadrunner, can be reached directly by a friend on the att network, so roadrunner's problems today may be even broader than connectivity with cogent.

Yep

I can no longer get to www.weatherunderground.com

My weather station started reporting connectivity problems at 5:56 AM this morning. I guess that is when they pulled the plug.

Who do you complain to - Road Runner?? I bet their tech support is clueless

Re: [TWC] Level3 breaks public peering

I'm in an online chat with a RR tech support, and they are just saying "routing issues outside of their network, with no ETA on resolution"

This will effect more and more throughout the day as people notice issues.

Well - Just for grins and giggles - I 'called' TW help desk

Lanze L> There is an issue routing to certain networks outside of Road Runner. This is due to a high level network restructuring and sites that are hosted on the affected network should become available again when the restructuring is complete. We currently have no ETA on resolution.

Lanze L> Was there anything else that we can help you with?

I am sure glad I dont work on a help desk.......

I switched my Brighthouse connection from RR to Earthlink in Fl. last nite. No better but $29.95 for 6 mos. & give RR somehing go think about. I have a friend who is on AOL w/ Brighthouse Cabe & has connetions to all the sites. But I refuse to put that software on any pc.

If you have a wireless pc connection try & see if you can connect via a neighbors DSL. I got 4 listed but only one is verizon & works fine..very slow but fine. The slow is a weak wireless signal.

I hope you switched for reasons other than this current routing issue. As you've discovered, switching to EL Cable didn't, and wouldn't, solve your problem. Your routing is EXACTLY the same today as it was yesterday. RR controls the routing, not EL.

My brother and grandfather both have EL cable through TW and everything works fine for them. I'm on RR, in the same city, and I can't access sites, photobucket.com etc, they can. If this doesn't get resolved soon I may switch over and see myself. It is cheaper for 6 months

It is affecting us in North Carolina too. My suggestion is to complain to your local US representative since Level3 is, among other things, a government contractor.

Be aware of proxymouse.com. If you have to put in anything personal (i.e. login to a site that isn't SSL) your information is sent CLEAR TEXT.

And since proxymouse.com isn't a secure proxy, you won't even be able to access SSL pages.

I can get to Drudge's site but not Photobucket. A tracert to drudge goes from rr.com to level3.net to some hops with no rDNS entries, then svwh.net (??), another unnamed hop, then drudge's host. A tracert to Photobucket times out after verio.net.

you need to look up what peering means...

It cost's level3 nothing to peer with cogent bandwidth wise because the only bandwidth cogent is using is whats already on level3's backbone, its not like they are accessing sites out of level3's network

Yeah, I cant get FIOS in my area, but I will have to move off RR if this isnt fixed by tommorw, my buisness runs on a CogentCO connection and i have to use proxys just to administer my servers, and frankly this type of thing is unacceptable. RoadRunner should have more than 1 ISP so if something like happends, everyone is not stuck in the mud.

Truth--

Public Peering is what makes the internet work. Its what allows Networks, ISP's, etc, to provide access, its not a matter of 'a customer not paying L3' its a matter of L3 saying, lets hold the intarweb hostage, and see if we can extort some money for it to be back in running order.

My guess is, they are going to lose alot more money from this fiasco then they planned on making.

Seriosuly, like the first post says, everyone needs to call Level3, and state that this is unacceptable, they are highly endangering their public support, and generally just voice their opinion, after enough calls from consumers (and trust me, enough companies like persay ev1servers.net have probably mentioned it to them as they are gettgin 1000 issues with peeople not accessing their servers) etc
